2010 Shanghai Rolex Masters 1000: Andy Murray & Robin Soderling zip through to the quarters
Amongst those to have made it through to the quarter-finals of the 2010 Shanghai Rolex Masters 1000 were Britain's Andy Murray and Sweden's Robin Soderling. Apart from commonly having extreme potential, despite giving it their all, both of the professionals haven't been able to perform up to par since the 2010 season hardly proved gainful for either of the two. Things, however, may turn around for them at the tournament, taking their recent form into consideration.
Upon defeating Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, Murray will be opposed by France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-finals of his draw. In a brief two set match, Andy defeated Chardy 6-3 in the first set and 6-4 in the set to follow. In the second round, Jeremy triumphed over Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov, beating him 6-1, 5-7 and 6-2.
Seeded no. 12 at the tournament, Tsonga got through with Germany's Florian Mayer to make it through to the quarters. Despite Mayer's constant struggle to remain evenly contested with the Frenchman, the professional was defeated 7-5 and 6-3, to be sent home. Earlier, the German defeat Russia's Mikhail Youzhny, winning the three set battle, 6-4, 7-6 and 6-1, to oppose Tsonga in the third round of the tournament.
Additionally, Soderling eliminated Spain's David Ferrer in his third round match, beating him 7-5 in the first set and 6-4 in the second, to come out victorious against the Spaniard. Ferrer beat Brazilian Tomaz Belluci 7-6 and 6-4 in the second round, before his reign was ended in the third.
Prior to making it through to the third round, Murray faced China's Bai Yan, upon receiving a bye into the second round of the tournament. The Briton defeated Yan 6-2 and 6-2 to advance at the tournament. Wild card entrant Bai opposed Andy after defeating the Czech Republic's Radek Štěpánek in the first round of his draw. Štěpánek was beaten 6-3 and 6-4, to be eliminated from the championship.
Meanwhile, similar to Murray, on receiving a bye into the second round, Soderling got through with Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic, defeating him 6-3 and 7-6, marking his straight set win. Tipsarevic however, faced Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev in the first round of his draw. Golubev was beaten 6-3 in the first set and 6-4 in the second, to be deleted from the tournament.
Provided that Murray makes it through to the semi-finals, the professional will either be opposed by Austria's Jurgen Melzer or by Argentina's Juan Monaco. As for Soderling, the Swede will either face Serbia's Novak Djokovic or Spain's Guillermo García-López, if he makes it through to the semis.
