2010 Shanghai Rolex Masters 1000: First Round Qualifiers
A number of professionals battled it out in the first round of the 2010 Shanghai Rolex Masters 1000 to make it through to the second round of the tournament. 

Seeded no. 1 at the championship, Spain's Rafael Nadal will be opposed by Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka in the second round of their draw. Wawrinka thrashed Frenchman Gilles Simon, 6-4 in the first set, and 6-1 in the set to follow, to advance at the tournament. 
Along the side of which, Lucky Loser, Spain's Daniel Gimeno-Traver defeated Uzbekistan's Dennis Istomin to make a place for himself in the second round. Istomin got off to a good start, taking the first set 6-3. However, the Spaniard
made a comeback in the second set, taking it 6-3 and furthermore, went on to win the deciding third set 6-3. 
Traver will be faced by Austria's Jurgen Melzer in the second round of his draw. Seeded no. 13 at the tournament, Melzer eliminated wild card entrant, China's Yang Tsung-hua in the first round, taking the first set 6-4 and the
second set 7-5. 
Spain's Fernando Verdasco faced defeat at the hands of Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker, as he was sent home upon losing his first round match. Thiemo defeated Verdasco 7-6 in the first set, winning a tie-breaker, and furthermore, taking
the second set 7-5.
De Bakker will be opposed by Argentina's Juan Monaco in his second round match. Monaco got through with Frenchman Florent Serra defeating him 6-4 in the first set and 7-6 in the second set of the first round match played between
the two.
Receiving a bye into the second round, defending champion, Russia's Nikolay Davydenko will be faced by Germany's Mischa Zverev. Qualifier Zverev got rid of Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky prior to making it through to the second round.
The German initiated the match with a 6-1 win in the first set. However, Stakhovsky reciprocated, bagging the second set 6-4. The two remained evenly contested, as they were tied 6-6 in the deciding third set. Nevertheless, the
match went in favour of Zverev, as he took the final set 7-6 upon winning the tie-breaker.
Additionally, with the defending champion still very much in the game, the professionals that remain will most definitely have to perform up to par to successfully advance at the tournament.
