2010 Shanghai Rolex Masters: Andy Roddick and John Isner storm into next round
The top seed, Andy Roddick from United States of America progressed into the second round of 2010 Shanghai Rolex Masters Singles' competition on Tuesday after his opponent, Philipp Kohlschreiber pulled out of the match as a result of his injury during the
second set.
The 28-year-old Roddick was leading by 6-3, 2-1 when his German foe announced his retirement. The clash concluded in 53 minutes and the Austin resident, as a result of this victory, has improved his match record to 43-12 on the year.
This was Roddick’s first appearance since the United States Open in New York where he got the better of Stephane Robert in his opening round clash. The final match score was 6-3, 6-2, and 6-2. However, in his next match there, the American was defeated by
Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia in a four-setter epic to record his first time second round defeat at the Flushing Meadows.
Meanwhile, in another action on Tuesday, Andy’s compatriot, John Isner, currently ranked number sixteen in the world, narrowly won his opening round match against Lukasz Kubot, a qualifier from Poland. Their final match score was 4-6, 7-6(9), 7-6(7) while
the clash concluded in two hours and fifty minutes. The American fired a total of twenty four aces and prevented five of his six break point chances to register his 35th victory of the season.
Moreover, Yan Bai, a wild card entrant from China and currently ranked number 465 in the world, converted all of his four break point chances to get past his Czech foe, Radek Stepanek in two sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-4 and the clash concluded
in eighty nine minutes.
“It is my first time in a top level tournament, so it is really an unexpected performance for me. My club gives me some opportunities to play overseas. They cover the cost. The national team also provides me with some support because I'm somehow different”,
said the 21-year-old Yan after his match.
Also, the 2010 Pilot Pen finalist, Denis Istomin was outlasted by Daniel Gimeno Traver from Spain in a three setter battle. The final match score was 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Serbia’s Davis Cup hero, Janko Tipsarevic, on the other hand, outshined Andrey Golubev in
two sets during an 83 minutes encounter. Their final match score was 6-3, 6-4.
