2010 Shanghai Rolex Masters: David Ferrer cruises into the second round
After finishing as the finalist of the 2010 China Open men’s singles competition in Beijing, eleventh seed Spaniard David Ferrer started off his Shanghai Rolex Masters campaign with a two setter victory over Michael Llodra in the opening round on Tuesday.
The final match score was 7-6(2) and 6-1 which concluded in a time of 88 minutes in the Chinese capital.
The 28-year-old Ferrer, who turned professional back in 2000, missed only eight points on the serve and broke on two occasions as he ended the game in a position of strength to dismiss the world number 28 Llodra on Tuesday.
The right hander Ferrer is coming off the China Open where he was seeded number eight to win the title. In the opening round; he got the better of Denis Istomin in two sets. The final match score was 6-4, 6-1. He then dispatched off Yen-Hsun Lu in the second
round in three sets. In the quarters, the Spaniard brushed aside Robin Soderling of Spain in two sets for a place in the final four where he successfully surpassed Ivan Ljubicic in three sets. The final match score was 6-4, 4-6 and 6-4. In the title battle,
Ferrer however was hammered down by Novak Djokovic in two sets with a final match score of 2-6 and 4-6. As a result of his final appearance, David has improved his ATP ranking to the number ten slot in the world.
The Valencia resident before reaching the final in Beijing had also recorded a semi-final appearance at the Malaysian Open men’s singles competition in Kuala Lumpur where he was eventually defeated by Golubev.
The Spaniard has been playing some great tennis at just the right time as he is attempting to grab a spot in the five remaining positions at the season ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London, which is set to take place next month. This season’s
Acapulco winner is currently ranked number eighth in the world by the Association of Tennis Professionals and is looking to be a part of the eight man field in London on the second occasion in his career. The 1.75 meters tall Ferrer previously ended as finalist
to Roger Federer at the Barclays event back in 2007.
