The American tennis player, Andy Roddick did not falter as he made a comeback on the tour after a three weeks injury break with a two-setter win over his compatriot, Sam Querrey in the opening round of the 2010 Swiss Indoors Basel Men’s singles competition on Wednesday. The 28-year-old Roddick has qualified for the season ending event, for the last seven seasons on the tour. The right-hander retired from his second round match of the Shanghai Rolex Masters in China due to his right groin injury. He closed out his match against Sam in one hour and thirty-eight minutes on Wednesday.
“I thought it was a really good match both ways, I thought it was good tennis, good points. I had to work as the second set tie break was very hard. It was a very high level in terms of both guys getting a lot of first serves in because the unforced errors were pretty low. So I am very pleased with how I played and the outcome,” reflected the American after the match.
As a result of this victory, this season’s Brisbane and Miami winner has improved his win loss mark to 44-13 on the year. He will next take on Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan.
Meanwhile, Radek Stepanek, who is currently ranked number thirty-eight in the world, recorded his 15th tour-level victory of the season as he brushed aside his Dutch opponent, Thiemo de Bakker in two sets on Wednesday. The final match score was 6-3, 7-6(5). Radek required only eighty-eight minutes to seal victory.
Earlier, in 2010, the wild card entrant from Czech Republic was sidelined for two and a half months because of mononucleosis and he is now competing in his 14th tour-level main draw, this season.
In a battle between two qualifiers, the in-form Jarkko Nieminen, from Finland, swept aside Daniel Brands of Germany in two sets to win his second round match on Wednesday. The final match score was 6-3, 6-2.
