2010 Swiss Indoors Basel; Andy Roddick versus Roger Federer – Match Preview

The second semi final round at the 2010 Swiss Indoors Basel Men’s singles competition pits the number one seed and world number two Roger Federer against the fourth seed Andy Roddick from the United States of America. This will
be their 22nd clash on the ATP World Tour.
The Swiss tennis maestro enjoys a huge lead in the pair’s head to head encounter at 19-2. However, an interesting fact is that Andy was very close to winning in their last match, the epic grass court Grand Slam final back in 2009,
where the 29 year old Roger triumphed in the end in five sets.
Like Federer, the American tennis ace, Andy Roddick has not lost a single set so far in Basel. In fact, both the semi finalists have also lost a serve just on a single occasion in six combined clashes.
The 28 year old Roddick is the top American contender on the ATP World Tour. He is playing in his seventh semi final or better in sixteen championships in 2010. The Texas resident is also attempting to qualify for the year ending
Barclays ATP World Tour in London for the eighth time in a row.
He opened his account in Basel on Wednesday, blasting sixteen aces to get past his compatriot opponent Sam Querrey in two sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-4. Roddick made his way into the quarters after overpowering Andrey
Golubev to set up a clash with David Nalbandian. In the final four, the former world number one easily won in straight sets with a match score of 6-4, 6-4. He also leads the championship with thirty seven aces and has held serve thirty one of thirty two games.
The right hander who made his debut on the ATP World Tour back in 2000 enters with a career mark of 10-3 in Basel. He previously reached the semi final round here back in 2003 before losing at the hands of former world number three
David Nalbandian.
Roddick owns a win loss record of 46-13 on the year and is competing in his first tournament since pulling out of his third round match at the Shanghai Rolex Masters in China back in October. He posted his best result of the year
by winning a crown in Brisbane after thrashing out Stepanek, followed by another title in Miami back in April.
The 1.88 meter tall, Roddick was also a finalist in San Jose as well as the Indian Wells earlier this season. He has captured at least one trophy every year since 2001 and is looking to end in the top ten on the ninth occasion
in a row. If the American successfully makes his way into the final, he will pick up 180 ranking points on the tour.
World number three, Roger Federer on the other hand, has so far captured the title in Basel on three occasions in his career. He is playing in his eleventh semi final or better in 2010 and stands at 7-3 in the final four this year.
The professional tennis player from Switzerland enters with a win lifetime mark of 37-7 in Basel and has yet to face a break point in twenty seven service game victories over Janko Tipsarevic, Radek Stepanek and Alexandr Dolgopolov
this week. Federer is recently coming off his third ATP World tour singles crown in Stockholm where he hammered down Florian Mayer to lift his 64th career crown on the tour.
He comes in with a win loss record of 55-12 on the year and since falling in the quarter final round at the grass court Grand Slam tournament in London, has triumphed in 24 of 27 clashes. The sixteen time Grand Slam champion who
has already qualified for the elite eight man field in London is looking in good shape to win his fourth singles title in 2010.
