2010 Swiss Indoors Basel: Preview of Tuesday's evening session
World number three, Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Ernests Gulbis will square off in the third match of the day at 2010 Swiss Indoors Basel Men’s singles competition. Djokovic leads the pair's head to head encounters at 2-1. Gulbis had triumphed in their previous
meeting in the opening round at Brisbane back in 2009.
The 22 year old Gulbis is making his debut in the main draw of Basel and comes in with a win loss mark of 29-18 on the year. He has reached the quarter finals or better on seven occasions on the ATP World Tour in 2010.
The professional tennis player from Latvia achieved his career highest ranking of world number 24 two weeks ago and is currently ranked number 26 in the world. The right hander captured his first ATP World Tour crown in Delray Beach back in February after
getting the better of Karlovic in straight sets. His notable appearances so far in the season include his semi final run in Rome and quarter final showdowns in Barcelona as well as Madrid.
The Serbian Djokovic, on the other hand, comes in with a win loss mark of 52-14 on the year. He is playing in Basel on the second occasion in his career and had surpassed the world number two, Roger Federer in the finals here back in 2009. In his most recent
performance, the world number three made his way into the semi final round at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Shanghai before losing to Federer. Djokovic won the title at Beijing Open last month.
The Serbian stands at 2-1 in the finals and was also a runners up at the United States Open in New York to Rafael Nadal. After his U.S. Open run, the professional tennis player from Serbia also helped his country reach the semi final round in the Davis Cup
ties. The right hander started off his season’s campaign with a quarter final run at the Australian Open and as a result, jumped to number two on the tour.
In the evening session, Marco Chiudinelli and Marin Cilic will square off in their first ever career meeting on the ATP World Tour. The 29 year old Marco is contesting his 25th ATP World Tour level competition of the year and enters with a win loss mark
of 14-28 on the season. He has triumphed in back to back clashes twice, making his way into the quarter final round in Stuttgart back in July and third round at Washington in August.
The professional tennis player from Switzerland is playing in Basel on the sixth occasion in his career and stands at 4-5 lifetime. He ended as a semi finalist last year before losing to Roger Federer in straight sets. The third highest ranked Swiss achieved
his career high ranking of world number 52 earlier this season in February. He is currently ranked number 76 on the tour.
World number 15 Cilic, who comes in with a win loss mark of 38-20 on the year, is the top tennis contender from Croatia. The 22 year old made his way into his eighth quarter-final or better in Vienna last week before falling down at the hands of Andreas
Haider Maurer in two sets. The final score line was 7-6,(1) 6-4. The professional tennis player from Croatia is competing in Basel on the second occasion in a row and had last year finished as a quarter finalist. Cilic reached his career high ranking of world
number nine back in February and spent eleven weeks in a row in the top ten.
In the concluding match of the day, Jan Hajek, a qualifier from Czech Republic, will take on David Nalbandian in their first ever meeting on the ATP World Tour. David, who is currently ranked number 29, has earlier enjoyed success in Basel with a win loss
mark of 22-5, capturing the crown back in 2002 and advancing into the title battle thrice so far in his career. Hajek, on the other hands, is playing in Basel for the first time and comes in with a match record of 13-20 on the season.
