2010 Swiss Indoors Basel; Preview of the opening two matches on Tuesday
A total of eight opening round clashes will be contested on today’s schedule of the play at the 2010 Swiss Indoors Basel Men’s singles competition. An action packed day highlights the second seed and reigning winner Novak Djokovic of Serbia, the sixth seed
Marin Cilic, the 2002 champion David Nalbandian and the third highest ranked Swiss, Marco Chiudunelli.
In the opening clash of the day, Janko Tipsarevic from Serbia will look for his second victory in as many meetings versus Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan on the centre court. Both of them are playing in the main draw for the very first occasion in Basel and
both have made it into an ATP World Tour final this year, Janko in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Denis in New Haven.
The 26-year-old Janko is the third highest ranked Serbian on the ATP World tour behind Novak Djokovic and Viktor Troicki and has advanced into the final eight or better on six occasions on the ATP World Tour in 2010. His best performance this season was
a finalist run in ‘s-Hertogenbosch where the Serbian was toppled by Stakhovsky in straight sets. Janko was also a semi-finalist in the opening week of the season in Chennai as well as in Los Angeles back in July.
He is playing in Basel for the first time in his career with a win loss mark of 24-21 on the season. The professional tennis player from Serbia is coming off his quarter final showing last week in St. Petersburg where he was hammered down by the ultimate
winner Kukushkin. World number 46 also assisted his country in reaching the final of the Davis Cup for the very first time and they will play against the French side next month.
The top Ukrainian tennis contender on the ATP Tour, Denis Istomin is also making his championship debut and enters with a match record of 32-27 on the year. The 24-year-old Istomin posted his best result of the season by making his way into the title battle
in New Heaven, before losing at the hands of Stakhovsky. The professional tennis player from Ukraine achieved his career high ranking of world number 39 back in August.
He is currently ranked number 43 in the South African Airways ATP list. Istomin was also a semi-finalist in San Jose, Eastbourne and in Moscow this year. The right hander also made it into the quarters back in July in Hamburg, falling down to the ultimate
winner Golubev.
In the second clash of the day, Richard Gasquet from France will look for his second victory versus Yen Hsun Lu of China, who is the top player from Asia and is currently ranked number 33 in the world.
The 27-year-old is contesting in Basel for the very first occasion in his career and enters with a win loss ratio of 15-19 on the season. His best results are the final eight appearances in Johannesburg and Wimbledon this season. He also registered his name
as the first player from Asia to make his way into the quarter final round of the grass court Grand Slam tournament in London since Shuzo Matsuoka back in 1995. The Chinese has never advanced into an ATP World Tour title battle so far in his career, however,
has reached thrice in doubles, capturing one title and ending as runner on two occasions.
World number 27 Gasquet also played in Basel last year and didn’t go beyond the quarter final stage. The third highest ranked Frenchman has made it into the quarters or better on seven occasions in 2010 and enters with a win loss mark of 35-20 on the season.
He reached the title battle in Sydney, captured his sixth ATP World Tour crown in Nice in May and was also a finalist in Gstaad.
