2010 Swiss Indoors Basel; Roger Federer and Tobias Kamke advance in the quarters
The 29-year-old Roger Federer improved his career mark to a 35-7 at his hometown competition as he got the better of Janko Tipsarevic in two sets on Wednesday at the 2010 Swiss Indoors Basel Men’s singles competition. The final match score was 6-3, 6-4.
As a result of this, the World number two has made his way into the quarterfinal round in Basel. Federer broke serve once in both sets and missed only seven points on serve as he dispatched off the world number 46 Tipsarevic on Wednesday.
The top ranked Swiss, who has lost only a single match in Basel in the last four seasons, needed just one hour to get past his opponent. Federer captured three successive trophies here from 2006 to 2007 before ending as a finalist to Novak Djokovic last year.
“The opening set was a really good level. I played a really good return game in the game I broke him, took advantage of some second serves and was aggressive. In the second set he never really had any chance on my serve. I just hung in there, gave myself chances and I think he went for a bit too much and just could not do it,” declared Roger after the match on Wednesday.
He further added, “It was a good match for me and I think I played well on the offensive, hardly made any mistakes, and overall I’m very happy,”
The Swiss is coming off his 64th career tour-level crown of the year in Stockholm where he won the title after getting the better of Florian Mayer. The right-hander has triumphed in 23 of his last 26 clashes since a quarter final exit at the grass court Grand Slam tournament in London.
Janko, on the other hand, was supported courtside by his Davis Cup team members Viktor Troicki, Novak Djokovic, and Nenad Zimonjic.
Meanwhile, Tobias Kamke, a lucky loser also cruised past the third seed Tomas Berdych in two sets in the concluding match on Wednesday. The final match score was 6-4, 6-1. The 24-year-old Tobias has jumped from world number 254, last season, to his career best number 72 this week. He broke his serve on four occasions from eleven chances to cruise past his opponent in Basel. The battle was stretched over a period of eighty-one minutes.
The 25-year-old Tomas is currently ranked number six in the South African Airways ATP list. However, his campaign to qualify for the elite eight-man field has suddenly lost momentum since the grass court Grand Slam tournament in London, where he made his way into his first major final before losing at the hands of world number one Rafael Nadal. Since then, Berdych has compiled a win loss mark of 7-11 on the tour. AT the year’s final Grand Slam, the United States Open in New York, Tomas was defeated in the first round by Michael Llodra.
He will travel all the way to the BNP Paribas Masters next week where there are thousand ranking points on offer to the champion.
Elsewhere, Robin Haase, also successfully made his way into his ATP World Tour quarter-final of the year after preventing all eight break point opportunities he faced to topple his eight seed foe, John Isner from the United States of America. The final match score was 6-2, 6-7(5), 7-5. The clash concluded after almost two hours on Wednesday.
The 23-year-old Robin has captured five ATP Challenger Tour crowns in 2010 and is looking to reach his first title battle on the tour.
