2010 Swiss Indoors Basel; Roger Federer defeats Novak Djokovic to win his fourth title in 2010
The 29 year old Roger Federer captured his hometown crown at the 2010 Swiss Indoors Basel Men’s singles competition on the fourth occasion in his career as he avenged his last year’s final loss to the world number three Novak Djokovic
with a three setter win on Sunday. The final match score was 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
"It is obviously a beautiful moment. It is always very emotional and just a good feeling and I am very happy. I have had a great history here. I cannot believe I have been in the final so many times and I have won already four
times. I could not be happier today,” said the delighted Federer on Sunday.
The sixteen time Grand Slam champion won his 65th career singles crown in Basel. It was his fourth title in 2010, adding victories at the year’s opening major event, the Australian Open in Melbourne, Cincinnati Masters as well
as Stockholm few days ago where he got the better of Florian Mayer in two sets.
The number one Swiss is the third contender on the ATP World Tour in 2010 to capture four tour-level crowns, following Sam Querrey from the United States of America and world number one Rafael Nadal.
"I have to back it up in London now. I have played three straight finals in a row and I have won crowns back-to-back in Stockholm and Basel. Now I have a couple of days off and a travel day as well to get to Paris and play well
there and it is only then that the focus will really shift to London. I would like to keep it up and play well in Paris and see how it goes from there,” reflected the former world number one Federer on Sunday.
Federer, who was also seeded number one to win the title in Basel made a quick start to his eighteenth career encounter with his Serbian foe and broke serve during the third game as he immediately took a lead of one set.
The second seed Novak was also quick to respond, though, breaking Roger’s serve on the second occasion this week during the second game of the following set to tie the scores.
Enjoying an eight match winning streak, the confident Swiss didn’t lose his concentration in the final set and from 1-1 took five games in a row to clinch win in the end.The match concluded in a time period of two hours on Sunday.
The Swiss native since squandering two match points in a five setter epic loss to world number three Djokovic in the final four stage of the year’s final major, the United States Open in New York, has defeated the Serbian twice
on the tour. He also surpassed him in the semi final round of the Shanghai Rolex Master in China last month.
With a title victory over the Serbian on Sunday, the right handed Federer has improved his life time lead over Djokovic to 12-6 in their head to head series.
World number three Djokovic on the other hand was playing in his fourth tour-level title battle of the year and thus dropped to a 2-2 mark on the season as a result of this loss. He has so far captured a total of two crowns in
2010 at the China Open in Beijing and Dubai and also finished as runner up at the United States Open in New York where the world number one Rafael Nadal completed his career Grand Slam.
Both Federer and Djokovic have already qualified for the elite eight man field, which is set to start later this month in London.
