2010 Tour Championship: Jim Furyk shines on the second day
The 2010 Tour Championship’s second round wrapped up on Friday at the East Lake Country Club in Atlanta, with Jim Furyk and Luke Donald having notched the mid-way lead by posting 5 under.
Criticism is pouring in for the American, who is also part of the 2010 Ryder Cup team headed by Corey Pavin. He started the playoff series with No. 3 ranking, but gradually his ranking dropped and by the time he entered the Tour Championship, he was No.
11. This served as a wakeup call for him and he realized that it was time to charge his batteries before taking the flight to Wales.
He started the day with a blast and fired a 5-under 65 down the lane with the help of a bogey-free back nine. Resultantly, he took the mid way lead but wasn’t alone in this, as the only European in the tournament posted an identical score to share the lead.
Next to Donald was Geoff Ogilvy, who was only one stroke behind, at 7 under.
Coming towards the World No. 11, he entered the second round with a 67 but fired a birdie on the first hole. He later took a break of two tees and smashed two more birdies at the fourth and the sixth holes. Then came a bogey on the seventh hole. Furyk failed
to find the green, which was on the right side of the fairway and in order to make up for it, he attempted a birdie try and missed that too. Furyk wrapped up the front nine with a 33. While proceeding towards the back nine, he made a score of 32 on the nine
holes, with the help of three birdies at the eleventh, fourteenth and fifteenth.
Now a brief background of the two-time winner in the PGA Tour this season, he made the cut at Barclays as No. 3 in the standings but got disqualified from the event after failing to make it to the pro-am session. Media reports suggested that the player couldn’t
reach the course for his tee timings as his alarm did not go off in the morning. Thanks to Phil Mickelson as the PGA Tour changed its pro-am policy for a year right after that incident. Jim Furyk accepted his fault and made his way back to Florida. For him
the loss was huge but bearable. He slipped six spots and didn't scare anyone for the next two weeks.
Somehow, a similar blunder of fate happened a year ago and the American missed the chance of winning the FedEx Cup. However, this time Furyk is ready to bounce on the US$ 10 million FedEx bonus and also retrieve his rank. According to the player, its bunch
money will help him prepare for the future Ryder Cup. He said that he was looking forward to give his best on the field. If money came with victory, then he does not mind having that kind of hard cash.
It is believed that if Furyk wins the 2010 FedEx Cup, he will be only the second player after Tiger Woods to have claimed the title. Tiger too had skipped a playoff event before attaining the cup. The only difference between the two scenarios was that Tiger
chose to skip it while Furyk accidently did that.
While talking to the media, Furyk said that he wants to join Woods with a record of 16 majors but that wasn’t in the cards for him during the current season. Finally, this was Jim Furyk’s performance in the second round of the 2010 Tour Championship. Other
than him, Luke Donald and Geoff Ogilvy also did a splendid job. The third round is currently in progress. Let us see who rises this time.
