2010 U.S. Open: American players struggle
Unfortunately, the year 2010 didn't prove too good for the Americans in terms of the U.S. Open. The farthest round the men made it to was the fourth. However, Venus Williams is still very much in the game, as she just made it through to the semi-finals and will be opposed by defending champion, Belgium's Kim Clijsters.
Wild card entrant, Ryan Sweeting was defeated by Lithuania's Ričardas Berankis in the first round of his draw. Sweeting was beaten 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 and 6-2 in the four set match. Berankis proceeded to face Austria's Jergen Melzer in the following round.
Alongside, USA's Taylor Dent eliminated Columbia's Alejandro-Falla Ramirez in his first round match. Furthermore, his reign was ended after Sweden's Robin Soderling thrashed him in the second round of the championship. Dent lost 2-6, 2-6 and 4-6 to the Swedish sportsman.
Amongst those to have lost their first round matches, Robby Ginepri was defeated by Argentina's Eduardo Schwank. The Argentinean took the first two sets 6-4 and 7-6. Ginepri managed to take the third set 6-4; however, the final set went in favor of Schwank as he won it 6-3. Furthermore, Eduardo was made to face Frenchman Arnaud Clement in the next round.
In the same draw as fellow-country man Ginepri, Mardy Fish cruised through the initial few rounds to make it to the fourth round. Although, sadly, Serbia's Novak Djokovic eliminated Fish after thrashing him 6-3, 6-4 and 6-1, three sets in a row.
Prior to his fourth round loss, Fish defeated France's Arnaud Clement. Earlier to which, he defeated Argentina's Pablo Cuevas. Furthermore, Mardy won his first round match against Czech Republic's Jan Hajek.
America's James Blake entered the championship on a wild card. Blake however, was defeated by Serbia's Novak Djokovic in his third round match. The sportsman lost 1-6, 6-7 and 3-6 in straight sets to Nole.
Blake defeated Belgium's Kristof Vliegen in his first round match. The professional proceeded to oppose Canada's Peter Polansky in the second round of the tournament.
Disappointingly, no. 9 seed Andy Roddick was incapable of making it past the second round of his draw. Roddick defeated Frenchman Stephane Robert 6-3, 6-2 and 6-2, three sets in a row to make it through to the second round.
However, Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic got rid of Andy in the match played between the two. A-Rod was defeated 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 and 7-6 in his second round match.
Roddick however, wasn't alone. Fellow country-man Robert Kendrick lost a five set match to Frenchman, Gael Monfils in his first round match. Monfils won 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 and 6-4.
Milwaukee's Tim Smyczek was defeated 6-3, 7- 5 and 7-6 by Brazil's Thomaz Belluci in the first round of the same draw. Accompanying him, Michael Russell lost to Russia's Nikolay Davydenko in the first round match played between the two. Davydenko won 6-4, 6-1 and 6-3 in straight sets.
John Isner blasted twenty-four aces in his second round match to make it through to the third round. Sadly for him, Russia's Mikhail Youzhny defeated the sportsman 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 and 6-4 in their third round match. Earlier, Isner defeated Switzerland's Marco Chuindinelli in the second round. And Portugal's Fredrico Gill in the first.
Chuindinelli defeated USA's Jack Sock in the first round of the championship, right before he made it through to the second and was faced by Isner. Sock lost 1-6, 4-6, 6-1 and 1-6 to the Swiss man.
Sam Querrey annihilated fellow country-man Bradley Klahn in his first round match to make it through to the second round. Spain's Marcel Granollers faced defeat at the hands of Querrey in the second round. As Querrey proceeded to the third round, he defeated Spain's Nicolas Almagro. However, the professional's run was ended today as he lost to Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka in the fourth round of the championship.
Atlanta's Donald Young lost his first round match to Frenchman, Gilles Simon. Young was defeated 1-6, 4-6 and 2-6, three sets in a row. Alongside, Ryan Harrison of the USA got rid of Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic, defeating him 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 and 6-4. The professional was opposed by Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second round of his draw. Stakhovsky defeated Harrison 6-3, 5-7, 3-6, 6-3 and 7-6.
Similar to the Men's draw, the American professionals in the Women's category fared just as horribly. Nevertheless, with Venus in top form, at least the Americans have something to hold on to. However, the nation will be more than just disappointed if Clijsters manages to defeat Williams in the semi-finals.
