2010 U.S. Open: The Quarter-finalists (Women’s Draw)
The bitter-sweet qualifying rounds of the 2010 U.S. Open have finally come to a close. Dismally, some professionals were made to go home; others however, worked their way up to make it through to the quarter-finals of the championship.
Defending champion, Kim Clijsters made a place for herself in the quarter-finals after defeating Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic. The Serb was eliminated from the tournament after losing 2-6 and 1-6 to her opponent. Clijsters will be made to face Australia’s Samantha Stosur in the quarter-finals.
Stosur defeated Russia’s Elena Dementieva to get to the quarter-finals. Stosur took the first set 6-3, to which Dementieva responded with a 6-2 win in the second set. The third set however, went in favor of Samantha based upon her 7-6 tie-break win.
With her sibling out of the way, Venus Williams will be playing the quarter-finals against Italy’s Francesca Schiavone. Williams got rid of Israel’s Shahar Pe’er in her fourth round match to make it through to the quarter-finals. Pe’er was defeated 7-6 and 6-3 by the American sportswoman.
Alongside, Schiavone knocked out Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the fourth round match played between the two. Francesca thrashed Anastasia 6-3 and 6-0, two sets in a row to cruise through to the quarter-finals.
Not all of the Russians ended up disappointing us, as Vera Zvonareva will be going head-to-head, with Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi in the quarter-finals. Zvonareva thrashed Germany’s Andrea Petkovic in the fourth round of her draw to get to the quarter-finals.
Petkovic was defeated 6-1 and 6-2 in straight sets. On the other hand, the Estonian sportswoman, Kanepi eliminated Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer to qualify. Kaia lost the first set 0-6. Much to everyone’s surprise, she clinched the second set on 7-6, on a tie-break. Furthermore, Kanepi took the deciding third set six games to one.
Amongst the qualifiers was Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki. The fairly young sportswoman will be opposing Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova in the quarter-finals. Wozniacki thrashed Russia’s top seed, Maria Sharapova 6-3 and 6-4, two sets in a row to make it through.
Similar to which, Cibulkova defeated a Russian by the name of Svetlana Kuznetsova in her fourth round match. Kuznetsova lost 5-7 in the first set and then 6-7 in the second set on a tie-break.
Apart from the top three seeds, professionals such as Kanepi and Cibulkova will also be competing in the quarter-finals for a place in the semi-finals of the championship. Can we expect another tweener from Schiavone?  Will Clijsters prove able of defending her 2009 U.S. Open title? – Well, we’ll just have to wait and watch.
