2010 U.S. Squash Open: First Round Qualifiers (Women’s Draw)
Eight extremely able professional sportswomen battled it out in the first round of the 2010 U.S. Squash Open Championship, to be put through to the round to follow. However, in contrast, the eight professionals to have lost were eliminated from the tournament
and sent home.
Amongst those to have made it through, was Italy’s Manuella Manetta. The sportswoman defeated Netherlands’ no. 1 seed, Natalie Griham in straight sets, to make it through to the second round of the tournament. Furthermore, Grinham was defeated 11-6, 11-9
and 11-8 as Manetta advanced at the championship.
The Italian sportswoman will be made to face America’s Latasha Khan in the second round of her draw. Prior to making it through to the second round, Khan defeated Britain’s Victoria Lust, in the first round match played between the two. Lust’s reign was
ended, just as she was beaten 11-4, 11-6 and 11-6, in straight sets by Khan.
Along the side of which, Ireland’s Aisling Blake got through with South Africa’s unseeded, Adel Weir-Nunan in the first round tussle between the two. Seeded no. 4 at the tournament, Blake defeated Nunan 11-4, 11-1 and 11-4, to secure a place for herself
in the second round of the tournament.
The Irish woman will be opposed by America’s Amanda Sobhy in the second round of their draw. Earlier to advancing to the second round, Sobhy went head to head with Canada’s Alexandre Norman in the first round, only to defeat her 11-6, 11-8 and 11-8, three
sets in a row.
Amidst the triumphant lot was Denmark’s Line Hansen. Seeded no. 5 at the tournament, the Danish athlete got rid of Britain’s Leonie Holt beating her, 11-9, 13-11, and 11-4, in straight sets, to be put through to the following round.
With Holt out of the way, Hansen will now go head to head with Frenchwoman, Isabelle Stoehr in the second round of the 2010 U.S. Squash Open. Stoehr made it through upon eliminating Canada’s Miranda Ranieri, 11-5, 11-8 and 11-3, in the first round match
played between the two.
Furthermore, seeded no. 7 at the tournament, Britain’s Emma Beddoes annihilated America’s Olivai Blatchford 11-9, 11-9 and 11-4, three sets in a row to proceed to the next round. Beddoes will be facing Netherlands’ Vanessa Atkinson in the second round of
the tournament.
Atkinson defeated fellow country woman, Orla Noom, 10-12, 11-7, 11-3 and 11-9 to make a place for herself in the second round of the championship.
Additionally, the eight professionals to have made it through will be filtered down to four, right after the second round of the tournament comes to a close. As far as the second round goes - May the best woman win.
