2010 Valencia Open 500: David Ferrer beats local favourite Potito Starace; through to semi-finals
Seeded no. 4 at the 2010 Valencia Open 500, Spain's David Ferrer defeated Italy's Potito Starace in the quarter-finals of his draw to proceed to the semi-finals of the tournament.
Ferrer and Starace remained evenly contested all through the first set. The Spaniard, however, bagged the set based upon a 7-6 win. Furthermore, David went on to take the second set 6-4, marking a straight set win for the professional.
Starace defeated Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas in the previous round. Cuevas was beaten 7-6, 2-6 and 6-2.
David will now be opposed by the no. 2 seed, Sweden's Robin Soderling, in the semi-finals of his draw. Soderling eliminated Frenchman Gael Monfils in the quarter-finals of his draw to make it through to the next round.
Monfils was defeated 6-3 in the first set and 6-2 in the set to follow. Earlier, Gael got rid of Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka, beating him 6-2 and 6-4 to proceed at the tournament.
Russia's Teymuraz Gabashvili battled it out against Ferrer in the second round of his draw. Unfortunately for him, the Spaniard eliminated him based upon a 6-4, 6-1 straight set win.
Gabashvili got rid of Frenchman Arnaud Clement prior to facing David in the second round. Clement lost an embarrassing 4-6 in the first set and 2-6 in the following set. Meanwhile, Ferrer beat compatriot Guillermo Garcia-Lopez
in the first round of his draw to advance to the next round.
Unseeded Guillermo initiated the match with a 7-6 win in the first set. However, it was not long before Ferrer made a comeback, taking the second set 6-3 and similarly, bagging the deciding third set based on his 6-3 win.
Amongst the triumphant four were also Spanish lucky loser Marcel Granollers and Frenchman Gilles Simon. The two will go head-to-head in the semi-finals of their draw. Granollers eliminated Argentina's Juan Monaco in the quarter-finals,
defeating him 1-6, 6-3 and 6-4. Simon on the other hand, got through with the no. 6 seed, Russia's Nikolay Davydenko. Simon took the match based upon his 6-4, 6-7 and 6-3 win.
