2010 Valencia Open; Andy Murray and David Ferrer storm into the second round
The number one seed Andy Murray won his opening round match of the 2010 Valencia Open Men’s singles competition on Tuesday, with a two set victory over Feliciano Lopez of Spain. The final match score was 6-3, 7-6(1).
The 23-year-old Scott who brushed aside Mikhail Youzhny in the title battle back in 2009, broke serve during the fourth game as he easily took the first set versus the world number 31 Lopez on Tuesday. However, his left handed foe, bounced back in the following set to take a lead of 4-1. Murray did well to immediately level the scores but was later forced to prevent two set points at 15/40 during the tenth game before sealing win. The battle lasted for a time period of eighty six minutes.
World number four Murray, who is contesting in his first championship since getting the better of Roger Federer at the Shanghai Rolex Masters in China, improved to a season match record of 42-14 as a result of this victory.
The Dunblane native is attempting to capture his third ATP World Tour crown of the year and further improve his form and game prior to the elite eight man field in London.
“It was a good start so hopefully if I can play a few matches I can start to feel better and better, but it is going to take me a little bit of time. Obviously there were a lot more important things to worry about last week than training so it might take a few extra days to feel very good again,” declared Murray after the match on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the fourth seed David Ferrer of Spain fought hard to make his way into the second round in Valencia against his compatriot Guillermo Garcia Lopez. The former champion rallied back from a set down to tie the score and also trailed by an early break during the third set before clinching a 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-3 victory on Tuesday. The clash was stretched to a time period of two hours and twelve minutes.
The 28-year-old David is hoping to secure one of the three remaining berths at the season ending Finals and is currently ranked number seven in the South African Airways ATP list. The Acapulco winner, as a result of this victory, improved his lifetime record to 13-4 in Valencia. He won the crown here back in 2008, after getting the better of Nicolas Almagro and also made it into the finals in 2005 before losing to Andreev.
World number forty, Juan Ignacio Chela also cruised past Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany in three sets to reach the round two at the hard court tennis competition. The final score line was 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. The professional tennis player from Argentine, Chela is coming off a final eight run in Vienna last week.
In other action, Viktor Troicki of Serbia also posted an emphatic opening round victory at the 2010 Swiss Indoors Basel Men’s singles competition on Tuesday, dismissing his German opponent Michael Berrer in two sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-0. Viktor needed only forty nine minutes to close out the battle and make his way into the second round in Basel.
The professional tennis player from Serbia, who won his maiden crown in Moscow after hammering down Marcos Baghdatis in the final few days ago, lost just eight points on serve and capitalised on four of nine break point chances to register his first victory in three encounters with this season’s Vienna semi-finalist, Michael.
