2010 Valencia Open; Highlights from Thursday
The Swedish tennis player Robin Soderling registered his name as the fifth contender to post 50 match victories in 2010 at the Valencia Open 500 Men’s singles competition on Thursday.
Soderling, who is seeded number two to win the title in Valencia, achieved this milestone on the very first occasion in his career after he got the better of Daniel Gimeno Traver from Spain in two sets. The final score line was 6-2, 6-3.The battle concluded
in a time period of sixty two minutes on Thursday.
The Swede, who has already qualified for the elite eight man field in London, won eighty two percent of service points and fired a total of five aces to make his way into his 13th final eight or better in 2010. He prevented all the break points
he faced on his way to victory.
Soderling has not reached the semi-final round in his last five championships, starting with the year’s final Grand Slam, the United States Open in New York. The professional tennis player from Sweden will definitely look to make his way into the final four
for the first time since July when he next meets the eight seed Gael Monfils of France. Soderling triumphed in their one last clash back in 2005 in Milan.
Gael made his way into the quarter final round in Valencia with a two-setter win over Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland. The final score line was 6-2, 6-4.
Meanwhile, the fourth seed David Ferrer of Spain also improved to a match record of 56-20 on the year as a result of his two-setter win over Teymuraz Gabashvil, a qualifier from Russia on Thursday. The final match score was 6-4, 6-1. The battle concluded
in a time period of seventy one minutes.
Gabashvili, on the other hand, dropped down to a career mark of 2-10 versus the top ten players, whereas, the world number eight David made his way into his 11th tour-level final four. He owns a 1-3 mark in the title battles in 2010.
Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, also posted his second victory in eight clashes versus his Argentinean opponent Juan Ignacio Chela in straight sets on Thursday. The final score line was 7-6(0), 6-2. Nikolay who is looking for a strong end to an injury plagued
year closed out the battle in one hour and thirty five minutes. The sixth seed skipped three complete months of the season due to his wrist fracture. The 29-year-old Russian, as a result of this victory has improved his match record to 28-17 on the year.
In the doubles action, Oliver Marach and Lukasz Kubot brushed aside d**k Norman and Wesley Moodie in three sets on Thursday. The final match score was 7-6(5), 4-6, 10-4. The clash was stretched to a time period of one hour and fifty three minutes.
Lukasz and Olivier started the week at fifth in the ATP doubles ranking, whereas, Norman and Moodie entered in the seventh place.
The third seed duo of Max Mirnyi and Mahesh Bhupathi also dethroned Michal Mertinak and Frantisek Cermak in three sets with a final score line of 6-3, 6-7(6), 10-6.
Elsewhere, the wild card entrants Jamie Murray and Andy Murray who are contesting in their 13th ATP World Tour competition as a pair swept aside Jun Ignacio Chela and Eduardo Schwank of Argentine for a spot in the semi-final round in Valenica.
The final match score was 6-2, 6-2.
The Scottish duo won seventy six percent of service points and converted four of six break point chances to seal win in fifty five minutes.
