2010 Valencia Open; Highlights from Tuesday
The Swedish tennis ace, Robin Soderling played some great tennis on his debut at the 2010 Valencia Open 500 Men’s Singles Competition on Tuesday, dispatching off Albert Montanes of Spain in two sets to make his way into the second round of the ATP World Tour 500 hard-court tennis event. The final score line was 6-1, 6-4.
World number five, Soderling blasted seven aces in the opening set and broke serve on two occasions as he raced to a lead of one set in only twenty-six minutes. The right-hander then broke serve early in the following set and continued his form until the end to seal win in sixty-six minutes.
The 25 year old, because of this victory, has improved his win loss mark to 49-19 on the year. He has made way into the quarterfinals in his previous five competitions. Soderling also reached the final of a major event earlier in 2010 at the French Open on the second occasion in a row. He is also one of the most consistent players on the tour who has performed brilliantly right from the start of the season.
Soderling is also the fifth contender to qualify for the year finale, successfully, in London where he ended as a semi finalist back in 2009.
The professional tennis ace from Sweden will next take on the world number 59 Daniel Gimeno- Traver, who smashed twelve aces to get past Nicolas Almagro in three sets on Tuesday. The final match score was 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The battle lasted for a period of one hour and fifty minutes.
World number 16, Nicolas captured the Valencia crown back in 2006 as well as the next year.
Meanwhile, the sixth seed Nikolay Davydenko bundled out Javier Marti, a wild card entrant from Spain on his ATP World Tour main draw debut, beating the eighteen-year-old youngster in two sets. The score line was 6-2, 6-2. The Russian, who broke serve on five occasions, closed out the match in seventy minutes. He won seventy nine percent of points behind his opening serve to post his 27th match victory in 2010.
The 29-year-old Nikolay is playing in Valencia for the fifth time and could not go beyond the semi final round back in 2009. He is looking to make way into his first ATP World Tour title battle since crushing Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in back to back clashes to capture his 20th crown in Doha in the opening week of the year.
In the doubles action, Max Mirnyi and Mahesh Bhupathi made their way into the quarterfinal round of the Valencia Open 500, thrashing out Stanislas Wawrinka and Jonathan Erlich in two sets. The final score line was 6-3, 6-3. The Indian–Brazilian pair of Mahesh and Max is currently ranked number eight in the ATP Doubles list.
Andy Murray and Jamie Murray, on the other hand, also cruised past their Spaniard duo of Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco in the opening round on Tuesday. The final score line was 6-3, 7-6(3).
Jamie wed Alejandra Gutierrez of Colombia last week in Dunblane, with younger brother Murray serving as the best man.
In other action at the Swiss Indoors Basel Men’s doubles competition, the American pair of John Isner and Sam Querrey survived Jarkko Nieminen and Michael Kohlmann in three sets with a score line of 2-6, 6-4, 10-5, whereas Janko Tipsarevic along with his partner LuYen-hsun got the better of Julian Knowle and Andy Ram in straight sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-3.
