2010 Valencia Open; Highlights from Wednesday
The twenty fifth ranked Juan Monaco recorded the biggest upset on Wednesday as he ousted last year’s winner and world number four Andy Murray in three sets during the second round of the 2010 Valencia Open 500 Men’s Singles Competition.
The final score line was 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
The professional tennis player from Argentine who had lost to the Scott three weeks ago in the final four round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters, broke the number one seed on three occasions before taking a lead of one set. Andy battled
back to level the clash, however Juan immediately took charge of the final set with the help of two service breaks to clinch a win in the end. The battle was stretched over the time period of two hours and eleven minutes.
This win marked the 26 year old Juan’s ninth career victory against a top ten contender on the tour and his second of the year after previously getting the better of the then world number ten Fernando Verdasco in the quarter final
round in Acapulco. The Santiago finalist as a result of this win has improved his match record to 29-18 on the year and has made his way into the quarter final in Valencia on the second occasion in his career.
The right handed Murray on the other hand suffered his earliest defeat since April, when the 23 year old was defeated in round two at Monte Carlo Rolex Masters. Murray however will play the doubles contest along with his brother
Jamie Murray in Valencia.
The Dunblane native will next participate at the BNP Paribas before playing the season ending finale later this month in London.
Meanwhile, the French tennis player Gilles Simon brushed aside Fernando Verdasco of Spain in a two setter clash on Wednesday. The final match score was 6-1, 6-3. The professional tennis ace from France closed out the battle in
only fifty six minutes.
World number fifty two Gilles broke serve on four occasions and won eighty one percent of points behind his opening serve to register his 21st tour-level win in 2010.
Fernando is also attempting to qualify for the elite eight man field on the second occasion in a row, however is currently outside the qualification positions in ninth place in the ATP list. The Spaniard has triumphed in just a
single clash since making his way into the quarter final round of the year’s final Grand Slam, the United States Open in New York.
Gael Monfils of France also continued his good form as he cruised past Eduardo Schwank in two sets in his opening round match of the ATP World Tour 500 hard court tennis competition on Wednesday. The final score line was 6-3, 6-3.
The eight seed French player captured his third career ATP World Tour crown a few days ago in Montpellier after surpassing Ivan Ljubicic. He broke serve on four occasions from six chances to dispatch off Schwank in just sixty six
minutes on Wednesday.
The 24 year old Monfils, as a result of this victory will next take on Stanislas Wawrinka at the Valencia Open.
Elsewhere, Pablo Cuevas, a qualifier from Uruguayan also reached the round two in Valencia with a two setter win over his Spaniard foe Albert Ramos Vinolas. The final score line was 6-3, 6-4.
Marcel Granollers, a lucky loser from Spain also triumphed in his first ATP World Tour clash since advancing into the semi final round in Bucharest a month ago, by overpowering Benoit Paire, a qualifier from France in two sets.
The final match score was 6-2, 6-4.
