2010 Valencia Open; Preview of Friday’s morning session
A total of four seeds namely Robin Soderling, Nikolay Davydenko, David Ferrer and Gael Monfils are among the top contenders in the quarter final round at the 2010 Valencia Open 500 Men’s singles competition on Friday.
First up on the centre court is the only all unseeded meeting, featuring Juan Monaco of Argentine versus Marcel Granollers, a lucky loser from Spain.
The 26-year-old Monaco is the top player from Argentine on the ATP World tour who is currently ranked number 25 in the South African Airways ATP list. He is coming off his best victory of the year over the world number four Andy Roddick on Wednesday. The
right hander who is playing in his sixth ATP World Tour quarter-final or better in 2010 enters with a win loss mark of 29-18 on the season.
The Tandil native enjoys a lifetime record of 5-2 in Valencia and posted his best result of the year since February by reaching the final round in Santiago before losing to Bellucci in a three-setter clash.
World number sixty seven Granollers, on the other hand, is playing in his second final eight round in Valencia and third on the tour in 2010. His best performance so far this season was a semi-final appearance in Bucharest in September, following with a
quarter final show down in Santiago back in February before losing at the hands of Gonzalez.
The Barcelona resident owns a win loss mark of 19-20 on the year and is playing in Valencia on the third occasion in his career. He gained entry into the main draw as a lucky loser when the seventh seed Jo Wilfried Tsonga pulled out of the event as a result
of his knee injury.
The right hander made his way into the quarter final round with a victory over Benoit Paire and Pablo Andujar earlier this week. He has so far won just a single title on the ATP World Tour back in 2008 in Houston after getting the better of James Blake.
Next up is Nikolay Davydenko versus the former top ten Gilles Simon from France. Nikolay triumphed in their first clash, however, Gilles has won their previous three.
Simon, 25 is playing in his sixth ATP World Tour quarter-final or better in 2010 and is recently coming off his quarter final exit in Montpellier where he was overpowered by Jo Wilfried Tsonga in three sets.
The professional tennis player from France enjoys a match record of 21-15 on the season and won his seventh career ATP World Tour crown in Metz after beating Zverev back in September. World number 52 has a 9-3 career mark in Valencia and advanced into the
final here back in 2006 before falling to Nicolas Almagro. Simon achieved his career high ranking of world number seven back in 2008.
The second highest ranked Russian, Nikolay who comes in with a win loss mark of 28-17 on the year is currently ranked number eleven in the South African Airways ATP list. He is playing in the quarters or better on the eighth occasion on the tour in 2010.
The 29-year-old is making his fifth appearance in Valencia and last year finished as a semi finalist.
The professional tennis ace from Russia posted his best result of the season in the opening week of the year in Doha where he surpassed Federer in the semi final and Rafael Nadal in the title battle to lift his 20th career ATP World Tour crown.
