2010 Valencia Open: Preview of Thursday’s evening session
World number eight David Ferrer and Teymuraz Gabashvili, a qualifier from Russia, will play the third match of the day in their first ever meeting at the 2010 Valencia Open Men’s singles tournament on Thursday. David has triumphed on six occasions in as
many ATP World Tour clashes as Gabashvili in 2010 however he is 55-20 whereas Gabashvili is 10-16. The professional tennis player from Spain is also looking in good shape to secure his place in the elite eight man field in London.
The 25 year old Gabashvili enters the round two with a win loss mark of 10-16 on the season. He started off his tournament’s campaign on Monday with a two setter victory over Arnaud Clement of France. The final score line was 6-4, 6-2.
World number 99 Gabashvili recorded his best ATP World Tour result by making his way into the quarter final round in New Heaven back in August. He made it into the final eight after beating Potito Starace, Xavier Malisse and Andrey Golubev before losing
to Denis Istomin. The right hander achieved his career high ranking of world number 59 back in 2009.
World number eight Ferrer, on the other hand, is attempting to make his way into his 11th quarter or better in 2010. He has reached a total of four ATP World Tour finals this season and was also runners up last month at the China Open in Beijing.
The professional tennis player from Spain captured his eighth ATP World Tour crown in Acapulco back in February. He comes in with a match record of 55-20 on the season and captured the title here back in 2008.
In the concluding match of the day, the eighth seed Gael Monfils of France will meet Stanislas Wawrinka from Switzerland on the third occasion in his career. Both of them are tied in their head to head encounters at 1-1.
The second highest French player Monfils is hoping to advance into his 11th ATP World Tour quarter or better in 2010. The 24 year old is coming off his first ATP World Tour crown of the season and third overall in Montpellier on Sunday.
The right hander was also a finalist in Stuttgart as well as Tokyo earlier this year. Monfils owns a match record of 40-17 on the season and has triumphed in forty clashes for the second straight season. He achieved his career high ranking of world number
nine back in 2009.
The 25 year old Stanislas, on the other hand, comes in with a win loss mark of 34-17 on the year. The second highest Swiss on the ATP World Tour is looking to make his way into his seventh quarter-final or better in 2010.
He made his Valencia debut three days ago with a straight set win over Andreas Seppi of Italy. The final match score was 7-6, (2) 7-5. The Swiss tennis ace won his second career ATP World Tour crown in Casablanca after getting the better of Hanescu and was
also a finalist in Chennai during the opening week of the year. His ranking has hovered between 19 and 27 throughout the season and is currently ranked number 21 in the South African Airways ATP list.
His other notable performances this year include his semi final run in Belgrade, quarter final appearance in Rome as well as the United States Open in New York.
On court number one, Marcel Granollers of Spain will face his compatriot Pablo Andujar whereas Potito Starace from Italy will take on Pablo Cuevas from Uruguay.
