2010 Valencia Open; Preview of Thursday’s morning session
A total of six single clashes will be contested on today’s schedule of the play at the 2010 Valencia Open Men’s singles competition in Spain.
In the opening match of the day, the sixth seed Nikolay Davydenko will take on Juan Ignacio Chela on the centre court. Chela leads the pair’s head-to-head encounter as he has triumphed in all six of their clashes at ATP World Tour competitions. Nikolay’s
only victory came in the Davis Cup play, however, the Russian could be motivated by his recent fall of the top ten as he fell to number eleven few days ago in the ATP list.
The 31-year-old Chela is looking to make his way into his fifth ATP World Tour quarter-final or better in 2010 and his first in Valencia. The right hander is coming off his quarter final run in Vienna last week where he was toppled by Nicolas Almagro. He
enters with a win loss mark of 28-22 on the season and captured his fifth and sixth career ATP World Tour crowns in Houston and Bucharest earlier this year.
The professional tennis player from Argentine is 3-1 in ATP World Tour finals in 2010. He achieved his career high ranking of world number 15 back in 2004 and spent a total of 47 weeks in the top twenty on the tour.
World number eleven, Davydenko who comes in with a win loss mark of 27-17 on the season is hoping to make his way into the quarter or better on the eighth occasion in 2010. The 29-year-old last week reached the quarter final round in Montpellier before losing
to Albert Montanes.
The second highest ranked Russian behind Mikhail Youzhny is playing in Valencia on the fifth occasion and owns a lifetime mark of 4-4. He posted his best result of the season by winning the title battle in Doha during the start of 2010 after beating both
Federer and Nadal on his way. The professional tennis player from Russia has captured at least one trophy for eight straight seasons.
Second up is a first time meeting between the second seed Robin Soderling of Sweden and Daniel Gimeno Traver. Both of them have had entirely different years as Robin has been to the final eight or better on thirteen occasions already, including the last
three major events as well. Daniel on the other hand, has done it only twice and both times on clay.
The 25-year-old Gimeno-Traver, who registered his second Top twenty victory of the season in the opening round over the sixteenth ranked Nicolas Almagro, is one of the four Spaniards in action on Thursday.
He comes in with a win loss mark of 18-24 on the year and is currently ranked number 59 in the South African Airways ATP list. Traver achieved his career high ranking of world number 53 back in September after making his way into the third round of the year’s
final Grand Slam, the United States Open in New York.
The Swedish tennis sensation, Robin Soderling on the other hand started off his tournament’s campaign on Tuesday with a two-setter victory over Albert Montanes of Spain. The final match score was 6-1, 6-4. He is attempting to make his way into his 14th
quarter or better in 2010.
The top Swede enjoys a match record of 49-19 on the season. He has made it into the quarters in his last five competitions namely the United States Open, Malaysian Open, China Open, Shanghai Rolex Masters and If Stockholm Open Men’s singles competition.
Soderling is currently ranked number five in the ATP list.
