2010 Valencia Open: Preview of Wednesday's evening session
The number one Brit, Andy Murray and Juan Monaco, who is a former top twenty player, will take the court for a second round meeting at the 2010 Valencia Open Men’s singles tournament on Wednesday.
World number four Murray, who won the title last year, started off his tournament’s campaign with a two setter win over Feliciano Lopez of Spain on Tuesday. The final match score was 6-3, 7-6 (1).
The 23 year old is attempting to make his way into his 10th quarter-final or better in 2010. Murray is appearing in his first competition since winning a sixth career ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown at the Shanghai Rolex Masters in China last month. The
Scott won the title after thrashing out Roger Federer in the finals.
He enters with a win loss mark of 42-14 on the season. The professional tennis player from Great Britain grabbed his first ATP World Tour trophy of the year in Toronto where he dispatched off the former world number three, David Nalbandian in the quarters,
Rafael Nadal in the semis and Roger Federer in the title battle in straight sets. It was his fifth career ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophy while first since last year in Valencia.
Murray is one of the five contenders to qualify for the year ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London along with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Robin Soderling. It will be his third straight appearance in the season ending elite eight
man field finale. Murray also leads the pair’s head to head encounters at 2-1.
The 26 year old Monaco, on the other hand, is the top player from Argentina in the ATP World Tour. He is attempting to make his way into his sixth quarter final or better in 2010. The right hander enters with a win loss mark of 28-18 on the season. The professional
tennis player from Argentina enjoys a lifetime record of 4-2 in Valencia and recorded his best run here by reaching the quarter final round back in 2008. The Tandil native has an 8-27 career mark against his top ten foes on the tour.
Monaco made way into his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final four of the season last month in Shanghai where he was eventually dismissed by Andy Murray. It was his first semi final appearance since late February when he had advanced into the semis in
Acapulco before losing to David Ferrero.
The third seed Fernando Verdasco and Gilles Simon will square off for the concluding match of the day in Valencia.
Fernando ended his three matches opening round losing streak on Monday with a two setter win over Michael Russel, a qualifier from the United States of America. The final match score was 6-4, 6-1. The Madrid native is the second highest ranked Spaniard behind
the world number one, Rafael Nadal. He comes in with a win loss mark of 42-20 on the year. The right hander is 2-2 in the finals in 2010, capturing trophies in San Jose and Barcelona earlier this season. He is also looking for one of the three remaining spots
in the elite eight man field in London.
World number 52 Simon is attempting to make his way into his sixth ATP World Tour quarter-final or better in 2010. He has a match record of 20-15 on the season and won his seventh career ATP World Tour crown in Metz, beating Zverev back in September. Simon
