2010 Valencia Open; Preview of the morning session on Wednesday
The opening round wraps up and the second round starts at the 2010 Valencia Open Men’s singles competition on Wednesday, with the top three seeds all taking the centre court at the ATP World Tour 500 competition.
In the first match of the day, the eighth seed Gael Monfils from France will take on Eduardo Schwank of Argentina.
The 24-year-old Monfils who is the second highest ranked French player behind Tsonga is coming off his first ATP World Tour crown of the season and third overall in Montpellier last week. The professional tennis player from France got the better of Ivan
Ljubicic in the title battle. Monfils was also a finalist in Stuttgart as well as Tokyo earlier this season.
The right hander is contesting in Valencia on the third occasion in a row and stands at 2-2 lifetime, advancing into the round two back in 2008 and last year. He enters with a match record of 39-17 on the season and is attempting to record 40 clash victories
for second time in a row. Monfils started the year at number 13 and is currently ranked number 14 in the South African Airways ATP list. The Frenchman achieved his career high ranking of world number nine last year.
World number 64 Schwank who comes in with a win loss mark of 14-23 on the season is hoping to snap a five match losing streak since his last victory over Robby Ginepri in the opening round at the year’s final Grand Slam, the United States Open in New York.
The professional tennis player from Argentina posted his best results of the season by making his way into the quarter final round in Santiago, Acapulco and Barcelona. He is playing in Valencia for the second time in his career.
Next up on the court is the fifth seed and last season’s runner up Mikhail Youzhny versus Pablo Cuevas. The 28-year-old Youzhny is coming off his career-high fifth ATP World Tour title battle of the year in St. Petersburg last week. He won his sixth career
crown in Munich back in May and earlier this month grabbed another title at the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur.
Mikhail was also a finalist in Rotterdam in February and Dubai in March. The top Russian player on the ATP tour enters with a win loss mark of 43-18 on the season and enjoys a career record of 4-2 in Valencia. He is looking to grab one of the three remaining
positions for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London.
Cuevas, on the other hand, is a top contender from Uruguay. He qualified into the main draw with a couple of victories over the weekend. The 24-year-old has advanced into the quarters or better on six occasions so far this year. He posted his best result
in 2010 by making his way into the semi final in Moscow two weeks ago.
The right hander enters with a win loss mark of 20-21 on the season and also has an ATP World Tour-best 15-1 mark in tie-breaks. The professional tennis player from Uruguay is playing in Valencia on the second occasion in a row. He overpowered Juan Carlos
Ferrero in the opening round before bundling out the tournament back in 2009.
Their only previous meeting came here in the second round last year where Mikhail Youzhny of Russia triumphed in three sets.
