2010 Viking Classic: Brendon De Jonge and Bill Haas
notch midway lead
The second round of 2010 Viking classic ended at Annandale Golf Club, Mississippi. The results are here and they are not surprising.
Brendon De Jonge, who hails from Zimbabwe and Bill Haas of the United States both shot a 66 on Friday and surged to an early victory in the second round .The duo was lone amongst the six joint leaders from the opening round to have reached the midway stage
with 12-under par 132.
Apart from them, Michael Allen also chased his debut victory on the PGA Tour even after 26 years of being professional. He wrapped up the day three shots behind the chiefs of the pack. Another player to join his second spot on the leader board was Nathan
Green. The Aussie carded 69 with the help of five birdies and one bogey. He was followed by a group of eight players at 138 strokes.
De Jonge came out of the clubhouse in the morning when conditions were suitable for birdies and made a perfect map of six birdies without missing even a single shot. Later, while speaking to the reporters, he said, "Obviously, being first out was a big advantage
as well. It was fun. It was a good round.” The Zimbabwean seemed right as early sun shine kept him out of trouble throughout the day. Although, it wasn’t an easy round but still, the results could have been better.
Meanwhile, Hass looked stronger with the confidence gained the previous day as his Thursday’s scorecard showed off four birdies and one eagle. Friday’s round was also equally good for him with six birdies. Hass said, "I've just put myself in a position to
make birdies and not make bogeys... there's easy holes out there, and there's hard holes. You've got to make sure you par those hard holes."
The 51-year-old Allen has four titles to his credit so far including 1989’s Scottish Open and 2009’s Senior PGA Championship. But he has never won on the PGA Tour in his more than 350 tournament appearances despite having finished twice as a runner up while
thrice in the third place. Allen commented, "I've never won out here but I've always believed in it....that's one of the main reasons I play. I play to make a living. I love doing what I'm doing out here.”
Moreover, De Jonge used a fast early start to post his second successive 66 on Friday then sat back in the clubhouse to see whether he could be chased or not. Bill Haas responded the challenge with another 66 joining De Jong at 12 under after two rounds.
Both players were simply spotless in both the rounds and they have yet to miss a shot at Annandale Golf Club.
The first round leader, Ken Duke failed to make an impact on the second day and was wiped off with a 2-over-par. After the round, he lagged behind with eight strokes. Briny Baird, on the other hand, stroked 3-under 68 to gain a higher position on the leader
board.  He was chased by the Palm City resident, Carlos Franco, who remained one shot behind with 70 and 72.
According to the organizers, the cut was made at even-par and 79 players qualified. Among the players who failed to make the cut into third round were David Duval, John Daly and Trevor Immelman.
This is it for the second round of the 2010 Viking Classic which made way for Brendon De Jonge and Bill Hass into midway lead.
