2010 WTA Tournament; Caroline Wozniacki and Vera Zvonareva advances in Doha
World number one Caroline Wozniacki played at her very best in her first round match of the WTA Tournament in Doha, overpowering her Russian opponent Elena Dementieva in two sets on Tuesday. The final match score was 6-1, 6-1.
The top seed Caroline at the season ending event dropped eight points in her seven service games and broke her foe on five occasions on her way to seal her victory in Doha. She closed out the match in fifty three minutes in the
end.
"Elena is a great player so to pull this one out was nice. I am really happy to get through my first match. I love it here and it is fantastic in Doha, the crowd and the support. It was a big help for me today and I'm looking forward
to my next one,” reflected the world number one in her on court interview on Tuesday.
The twenty year old Dane earned her WTA-leading 60th clash win of the year. She also stands at number one in terms of the most trophies on the WTA tour in 2010 as she won a total of six this season in New Haven, Tokyo, Ponte Vedra
Beach, Montreal, Beijing and Copenhagen. A crown in Doha would be her biggest one of the season as well as her career.
Elena, on the other hand had pushed Caroline to three sets in their two other clashes in 2010, falling to the Dane in the final four of New Haven as well as in the title battle at the Japan Open in Tokyo.
The Russian as a result of this loss has dropped down to a 3-9 career mark versus the number one’s, those victories coming versus Martina Hingis back in 2001, Lindsay Davenport back in 2005 and the American tennis ace Serena Williams
earlier in 2010 in the Sydney tournament.
In other action, Vera Zvonareva did well to topple Jelena Jankovic in her opening match of the WTA Championship later in the afternoon on Tuesday. Vera got the better of the former top ranked Jelena comprehensively in straight
sets. The final score line was 6-3, 6-0.
The second seed Vera at the $4.55-million year ending tournament, had won her final six sets versus Jelena and that became eight in a row with yesterday’s victory.
Vera actually took eight games in a row from 4-3 in the opening set; Jelena lost that first set on a double fault and the clash on a forehand into the net.
"I am excited. It is an amazing feeling to win my first match of this year's WTA Championships.  The players are very tough here and everyone who made it to the final eight deserves to be here. I was just trying to do my best on
the court today as it always looks easy from the side, but the first set was really long and we had some great rallies today,” added Vera after the match on Tuesday.
She, as a result of this victory now leads the pair head to head encounter at 7-6.
Jankovic, on the other hand struggled to find her rhythm after a stellar start to the year. She was 32-12 through Wimbledon however has dropped down to 6-9 since then.
When asked about her recent form Jelena said that she is still suffering from an illness that affected her few days ago. She didn’t look comfortable right from the start of the match as she was also having problems in breathing
during the clash. However, one good thing about this match for her was that she despite feeling ill didn’t give up and completed the match.
