2010 WTA Tournament: Samantha Stosur hoping to end the year on a strong note
The professional tennis player from Australia, Samantha Stosur is looking to perform well in her first singles appearance at the WTA Tournament in Doha, considering the fact that she has been playing some impressive game of tennis in the last few months.
Moreover, another factor that favours Stosur to end the season on a strong note is her level of fitness as she is currently looking hundred percent fit and ready to take up the big challenge in the elite eight women field.
"I practiced at eight o'clock the other night and it was probably some of the worst humidity I have ever played in. It is definitely challenging. I have been here a few days now and hopefully that will help me get through playing in the heat and everything
else that comes with that,” said Stosur in her recent interview while commenting on the season ending tournament in Doha.
The professional tennis player from Australia is seeded number five to win the title in Doha. She is coming off after taking a one week rest on the tour and is therefore fresh for the season finale which features the year’s best eight players excluding the
injured Serena Williams and her elder sister Venus Williams. Stosur also went to the tournament’s venue several days prior to the start of the event and is now confident that she is pretty much familiar of the field and environment.
When asked about the conditions in Doha, the world number five Stosur added that they are quite tough without any measure of speculations as it is warm and humid. However, she is hopeful that she will manage the heat during her matches on the court.
The right hander is scheduled to begin her tournament’s campaign on Wednesday versus this season’s French Open winner Francesca Schiavone of Italy who won her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros.
She will probably require victory in two matches from her three Maroon Group clashes in the main draw. She will take on world number one Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the second round and the seventh seed Elena Dementieva of Russia in the third to progress
to Saturdays final four battle.
Stosur, who is famous as one of the physically strongest player on the WTA tour, also enjoys the benefit of having played in the doubles event in Doha on two occasions in her career. She also won the title back in 2005 along with her partner Lisa Raymond.
The 26-year-old now has an opportunity to register her name along with Lindsay Davenport, Martina Navratilova, Jana Novotna as well as Martina Hingis as the few players to have captured both the singles and doubles titles in the year ending event in Doha.
When asked about her singles appearance in Doha, Stosur reflected that it is all together different to contest in the singles as it requires a lot more hard work than the doubles. However, she admitted that her past doubles appearance will definitely help
her in playing well in the singles competition this season.
"First things first, you have got to play three matches and see how you go there. And then you have got to play well as you are playing the best players in the world, so you cannot go out there and play averagely and expect to get through. You have got to
give it your best and go for it,” added Stosur.
