2010 WTA Tournament Wednesday highlights
The Australian tennis ace, Samantha Stosur upset the world number one Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in a two-setter clash at the season ending WTA Tournament in Doha on Wednesday. The final match score was 6-4, 6-3.
The fifth seed Stosur served tremendously well against the 20-year-old Dane and prevented six break points she faced against Caroline.
Stosur who blasted a total of 26 winners to seal victory, when asked about her superior performance over the world number one player on the tour said on Wednesday, "Anytime you beat the number one player in the world it is a good thing. It is so exciting
to be here. Everything seems to be coming together. Hopefully I can keep playing like this."
She recorded her second career win over a reigning top ranked player on the tour, her first coming earlier this season at the clay court French Open where the professional tennis player from Australia got the better of Serena Williams of the United States
of America in a nail biting thriller in the final eight. She is the only contender from Australia in the last seven seasons to surpass a number one player since Jelena Dokic back in 2003.
The right hander as a result of this victory now stands at 2-0 in her group, having defeated the fourth seed Francesca Schiavone on Tuesday.
The number one Caroline, on the other hand, is now 1-1 at the WTA tournament, having defeated the seventh seed Elena Dementieva of Russia in her opening match.
"I think I had break points in almost every game in the first set, and I didn't take any of them. Sam had one and she took it. I never like losing. I prefer to win. But Sam was playing well today and it was tough. Hopefully I can win tomorrow so I can be
through to the semi finals,” Caroline reflected after the match on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the second seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia also cruised past Victoria Azarenka in a two-setter clash on the second day of the round robin in Doha. The final score line was 7-6, (4) 6-4.
In other action, the reigning United States Open champion, Kim Clijsters also won her second match of the 2010 WTA Tournament in Doha, as she brushed aside Jelena Jankovic of Serbia on Wednesday. She last captured a title here back in 2003.
In spite of the fact that the Belgian tennis ace, Kim had not played on the tour since winning her third United States Open title six weeks ago in New York, she did well and looked quite confident at her two-setter victory versus the former number one player
from Serbia. The final score line was 6-2, 6-3.
Her movement didn’t look perfect as she went through a foot operation last month in order to remove a mole due to which she also double faulted on a total of ten occasions on her way to clinch win.
However, there is no doubt about the fact that the Belgian tennis ace did hit the ball well from the forehand side and blasted a total of twenty five winners altogether and also played well on the big points.
She started off the match very well, breaking serve just once and then smashed a stunning running cross court backhand passing shot to create a double break at 5-2.
In the second set, the Belgian however had to battle tougher, requiring to prevent two break back points at 3-2 as Jelena improved her game and played more attackingly. The Serbian despite of trying hard to get back in the match couldn’t make it up till
the end and thus Clijsters successfully made her way into the next round in Doha.
