2010 WTA Tournament in Doha; Highlights from Thursday
World number one Caroline Wozniacki cruised past the reigning French Open winner Francesca Schiavone in a three setter clash on Thursday at the 2010 WTA Tournament in Doha. The final score line was 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
The twenty year old Dane, as a result of this victory, has also confirmed her season end number one ranking on the WTA tour. She did not start off the match strongly as the top seed was outplayed by her opponent, who broke serve
during the fourth game and never let go, blasting a total of three aces in a row to take a lead of 40-0. The fourth seed Schiavone, took the set with a screaming backhand winner down the line.
The match then took a new turn with the start of the next set as Schiavone managed just two more games in the rest of the battle on Thursday. Their differentials in the end were very close, Caroline one and Schiavone four; however,
it was the world number one who played the important points better than her opponent.
"Francesca was playing really, really well in the first set. I didn't have too many chances to break her. I knew I had to stay focused and from there I did not allow her to dictate the points as much. I am really happy to win,”
said the top seed Caroline after her victory on Thursday.
The Dane is spending her third straight week as the top ranked player on the WTA Tour and the ranking will now remain the same for the rest of the season.
When asked about her season end top ranked position, Caroline reflected that it is something like a dream for her and she is really happy with her performance this season on the tour and is hoping to continue her form next year
as well.
In other action, Elena Dementieva from Russia came out on top versus the Australian tennis opponent, Samantha Stosur in a three setter clash, battling back from a set down to defeat the Australian on Thursday. The final score line
was 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(4).
Stosur looked quite confident while coming into the match as she also triumphed in their previous meeting at the United States Open in New York; however, Elena greatly improved her game after losing the opening set and in the end
took avenge of her major defeat by winning the battle.
The seventh seed Elena, broke early in the second set and in spite of the fact that she gave up the one break lead she got another break during the ninth game to go up at 5-4. The professional tennis player from Australia, Stosur
missed both the break point chances she faced in the decisive set. Subsequently, Elena clinched victory with a service winner down the line on Thursday.
"It was not easy to play today after losing to Caroline very easily, but I just tried to improve and be ready for today. Sam had a great win last night. I tried to fight for every point. I am really enjoying my time here, it is
very special for me to be here in Doha playing the WTA Championships,” said Elena after the match.
Meanwhile, the 2010 United States Open winner, Kim Clijsters of Belgium also swept aside Victoria Azarenka in three sets to confirm her semi final berth in Doha on Thursday. The final match score was 6-4, 5-7 and 6-1.
World number four Clijsters sealed victory with the help of an ace to stay perfect in the white group at the WTA Tournament in Doha.
