The 2010 year on the WTA tour saw some of the finest matches ever played in the history of game with its brightest players in action against each other. Bettor.com takes a look at the top ten matches in reverse order that compliment competitive edge as well
as ferocity.
10. Venus Williams overpowered Laura Pous Tio; Acapulco quarterfinal
The 7-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams from the United States of America posted a remarkable win over her Spanish foe in the middle of howling crowd support in the American's favour. Venus played extremely well under immense pressure
situation in front of a huge crowd and did not falter at any stage of the game to emerge victorious in the end. Her confidence and superb handling of the situation made it all the more exciting.
"I really have never had that kind of crowd support ever in my life.., never anywhere. If I never experience that again, I can remember today,” said the American after bouncing back from a deficit of 5-1 in the decisive set to clinch 4-6,
6-3, 7-5 victory in the end.
The American, later on, went all the way to pick up the crown.
9. Justine Henin thrashed out Maria Sharapova, French Open third round
This classic battle took more than a day to finish as a result of inevitable bad light suspension. When the 4-time French Open winner Justine Henin won the opening set versus her Russian foe, nearly all of us thought to be a lopsided wrap
up for the Belgian player.
However, contrary to everyone’s expectations, Maria Sharapova’s fierce competitiveness saw her bouncing back into the match, combined with her aggression on the court. When the match resumed on Sunday, the former world number one Russian
immediately took a lead of 2-0 with three more points’ in hand on Justine’s serve at 0-40. Henin held and broke her opponent just when it appeared that a major upset was in offing, in order to complete the scintillating victory with a score line of 6-4, 3-6,
6-3.
The match also featured a couple of double faults and errors apart from shot making brilliance with Justine getting through in the end after a tussle that will be recalled for years to come.
8. Kim Clijsters defeated Venus Williams; United States Open semi-final
The American tennis ace, Venus Williams once again features in the list, however, this time on the losing side on her home soil at the biggest venues in the United States of America.
Kim Clijsters of Belgium was up versus her rival in the final four battle whom she had previously hammered down in Miami after posting a straight set win.
Williams, who has so far won the United States Open title on four occasions in her career, started off the match ideally and won the opening set as a result of a break during the ninth game.
The following set however, was an all together different story as a couple of unforced errors started pouring in that provided Clijsters a window of chance. Venus served back-to-back double faults after the set went into the tie break and thus made things
easier for Clijsters to level the scores.
In the final set, both of them traded breaks before Kim hit some of her best shots to break her American opponent one last time to seal win and advance into the title battle. The final match score was 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4.
Despite losing the match, Williams did not miss a chance to give a glimpse of her optimistic thought by saying, "I would have liked to win this match and be playing tomorrow. I may have lost the match, but that’s just this match, there will be others.”
