2010 WTA tour; top ten matches of the season - Part two
Here is the second part highlighting the top ten matches on the WTA tour in 2010.
7. Jelena Jankovic hammered down Serena Williams; Rome semi-final
After splitting the opening two sets in the middle of an array of unforced errors and shot making class, both the contenders forced a decided third set which saw a total of three trades of breaks with Jelena preventing two match points to enter the tie break
on a high note. Once the battle reached the tie break, former world number one Serena Williams took a lead of 5-2 with Jelena on serve.
An ace from the Serbian tennis sensation, Jelena, at 3-5, was disqualified since Serena raised her hand for not being prepared for the serve. The chair umpire testified however Jelena’s persistent protests, combined with spectator’s whistles further aggravated
the situation.
The American, as a result, lost her concentration and made a couple of errors to give way the clash with a final score line of 4-6, 6-3 7-6 (5).
"For me, when the server comes to the line the receiver had to be ready. That is the rule, right?" reflected Jelena in a post clash conference.
Williams, on the other hand, decided not to dwell for the defeat. "I think I had an apple in my throat, but it is what it is. I cannot beat myself up over it - I just came back from the injury layoff.”
Jelena, by virtue of this victory, registered her name as the seventh player in the history of the WTA tour to score back-to-back victories over the William sisters. The right hander previously made her way into the semi-final round of the competition after
getting the better of Venus Williams in the quarters in straight sets.

one of the latest matches I ever played in my life. It was really difficult to stay focused. We had ups and downs all the time, both of us, during the match."
Samantha, on the other hand, when asked about her nail biting victory said that it was one of the most exciting matches she has ever played.
