2010 Wellington Challenger tournament; Second seed Sally upset by Wejnert

The 19-year-old Sally Peers of Australia who was seeded number two to win the title in Wellington was bundled out in the opening round of the $US25,000 ($NZ32,190) women's Challenger tennis competition on Tuesday.
Peers who made her debut on the WTA tour back in 2008, went into the event with a world ranking of number 155, however was dispatched off by her compatriot player Monika Wejnert in a tough battle three setter clash.
Wejnert, who is currently ranked number 475 in the world, did well to cruise past the Australian in the end. The final match score was 2-6 6-4 7-5.
The eighteen year old Wejnert who achieved her career high ranking of world number 324 last year during the month of November played in her first Grand Slam tournament back in 2009 at the Australian Open in Melbourne. The Australian
however couldn’t even win her first round match as she was dismissed by Karin Knapp in a close battle in two sets. The final score line was 7–6, 6–4. During the 2009 Australian Open wildcards round robin stage, she got the better of Jelena Dokic in three sets.
They faced each other again in the title battle where Monika was defeated in three sets.
At the Brisbane International, she was once again toppled by the eventual finalist Marion Bartoli with a match score of 6–1, 6–2.
In other action, Leela Beattie, a teenager from Canterbury had her chances versus the sixth seed and world number 255, Elitsa Kostova of Bulgaria, however was at last surpassed in three sets. The final match score was 6-4 6-7 6-3.
Meanwhile, Katherine Westbury of New Zealand and Chelsea Te Tai fought a bitter wind for two hours forty minutes in their clash that was eventually won by Westbury in three sets. The final match score was 1-6 6-2 6-1.
In the concurrent men's Futures competition, the eighteen year old Adam Lee of Auckland will gain an ATP ranking after triumphing in his opening round clash over Keyser Harrison from Australia, who pulled out while trailing at

Other New Zealanders who made their way into the second round include the third seed Michael Venus, who brushed aside Wellington's Warwick Foy in straight sets. The final match score was 6-1 6-1.
Anton Bettink was ousted 6-2 6-2 by Ben Mitchell, whereas fourth seed Australian Sam Groth was too strong for Stefan Williams from Auckland who triumphed in straight sets on Tuesday. The final match score was 6-2 6-3.
