2010 Women’s World Squash Open, Semi-finalists
Four extremely able squash professionals triumphed through the initial few rounds to make it through to the semi-finals of the 2010 Women’s World Squash Open.
Malaysia’s Nicol David defeated compatriot, Low Wee Wern 11-2, 11-5 and 11-2 in 27 minutes to make a place for herself in the semi-finals of the championship. Prior to her quarter-final win against Wern, David eliminated Egypt’s Raneem El-Weleily based upon
her 11-7, 11-7 and 11-7 straight set win.
In round one, the World no. 1 thrashed Egypt’s Farah Abdel Meguid 11-2, 11-3 and 11-5, three sets in a row to qualify for the rounds to follow. David will be made to face Britain’s Alison Waters in the semi-finals of her draw.
Alongside, Waters defeated fellow country woman Vanessa Atkinson in the quarter-final match played between the two. The 56 minute long, 5 set tussle was brought to a close as Waters verily took the match 9-11, 11-4, 11-7, 10-12 and 11-8 respectively.
Earlier, the Britt got through with Hong Kong’s Annie Au, defeating her 11-2, 11-7 and 14-2, three sets in a row to qualify for the next round. Alison also defeated Egypt’s Kanzy El-Dafrawy 11-2, 11-2 and 11-3, in 23 minutes to cruise through the first round.
The first ever Egyptian to make it to the semi-finals of the World Open, Omney Abdel Kawy, thrashed Australia’s Kasey Brown to be put through to the next round. Kawy defeated Brown 11-8, 14-2, 6-11 and 11-5, only dropping one set.
Before making it through to the quarter-finals, Kawy got rid of New Zealand’s Jaclyn Hawkes to proceed further. Hawks was sent home upon losing 11-8, 13-11 and 11-4. In Kawy’s first round match, the sportswoman got rid of England’s Tania Bailey by thrashing
her 11-7, 6-11, 11-8 and 11-8 in 48 minutes.
Omney will be opposed by the first ever Frenchwoman to make it to the semi-finals of the World Open, namely, Camille Serme.
Additionally, Serme defeated Britain’s top seed, Jenny Duncalf 8-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-2 and 11-5 in a 57 minute match to breeze through to the semis. Another Britt by the name of Laura Massaro was made to face defeat at the hands of Camille in the second round
match played between the two.
Massaro was beaten 11-6, 8-11, 12-10, 3-11 and 11-6 respectively. Serme also defeated Netherland’s Annelize Naude in the first round match of the championship. Naude lost 9-11, 14-12, 11-4 and 11-4 in a 48 minute battle.
Conclusively, all four players seemed to have performed commendably to have made it this far in the tournament. Unfortunately, two out of the four professionals will be sent home. As for the other two, may the best woman win.
