2010 Women’s World Squash Open: Kawy storms into final
Seeded no. 4 at the championship, Omneya Abdel Kawy made history at the 2010 Women’s World Squash Open, by becoming the first ever Egyptian to make it past the quarter-finals of the World Open. Not only did Kawy make it through the semis, she also defeated
Frenchwoman, Camille Serme to make a place for herself at the championship final.
Omneya got off to a good start as she took the first set eleven points to four. Despite the fact that Serme tried her best to level herself with Kawy, she seemed to have failed miserably as the Egyptian sportswoman bagged the second set based upon her eleven
to seven point win.
The brief 26 minute match was brought to a close, just as Kawy took the deciding third set, eleven points to six. The professional’s straight set win ended Camille’s reign. On the contrary however, it put Omneya through to the tournament final, where the
sportswoman will go head-to-head with Malaysia’s top seed, Nicol David.
Triumphant on home land, Kawy stated, “I am higher ranked, this is my home, my family, my friends, my coaches and my supporters were all here – so I have to win. There could be no excuses.”
The sportswoman went on to say that this was the first time she had made it to a World Open semi-final and that she was really focused. Additionally, she said that she pressurized herself into delivering and that worked out well for her.
In contrast to which, the evidently dejected, Frenchwoman proved to be a true player by stating that she did her best but did not feel the same during the semi-final match. “But I have had a great tournament and will try to do even better next time,” added
Serme.
Prior to her semi-final loss, Camille defeated Britain’s Jenny Duncalf to advance to the next round. In an arduous five set tussle, Serme came out victorious against the Britt defeating her, 8-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-2 and 11-5 respectively.
Along the side of which, Kawy got rid of Australia’s Kasey Brown in the semi-final match played between the two. Brown was defeated 11-8, 14-12, 6-11 and 11-5 in a 55 minute, four set match.
Furthermore, the Egyptian professional has shown a lot of potential by making it this far at the championship. Considering the fact that the World no. 1, Nicol David won’t be easy to annihilate, even having made it this far, apart from making history, Kawy
has done the nation proud regardless of whether she clinches the championship title or not.
