2010 Women’s World Squash Open: Nicol David zips through round two
Presently ranked number one in the world, Malaysia’s Nicol David annihilated Egypt’s Raneem El-Weleily in a three set, second round match to make a place for herself in the quarter-finals of the 2010 Women’s World Squash Open.
Two time junior champion, El-Weleily was made to face defeat on home ground as David brought a close to the match, based upon her straight set win. As the match started off, David took the first set 11-7. Furthermore, similar to the first set, the Malaysian
clinched the second set 11-7 once again.
The 30 minute match finally came to an end as David took the deciding third set 11-7 yet again. Even though it seemed to have been a crisp, easy match, the players thought otherwise.
In the words of Nicol, “I was trying to keep composed. I know that with being in Egypt and playing Raneem I expect her to come up with everything.” Furthermore, the sportswoman stated that because she was playing on her opponent’s home ground, she focused
hard.
David went on to exclaim that she thought Raneem has really developed her game a lot, and that her shots can work really well. Nicol then said that she knew El-Weleily was going for it and she had to keep a look out and not let her do that.
The Malaysian sportswoman will go on to play fellow country woman, Low Wee Wern in the quarter-final held at Soho World Square in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. Wern defeated Frenchwoman, Isabelle Stoehr to make it through to the quarter-finals of the championship.
Additionally, this is the first time that the two Malaysians reached the last eight.
Prior to David’s second round win, the professional defeated Egypt’s Farah Abdel Meguid in the first round match played between the two. Nicol showed Abdel what she’s all about, by coming off to a good start and taking the first set 11-2.
Struggling to level herself with the Malay, Meguid proved incapable of doing so, as the second set also went in favour of David. Farah lost the second set 11-3. Furthermore, she went on to lose the deciding third set 5-11.
Considering the fact that Nicol is rather invincible at the moment, the player is most likely to make it through to the finals and is capable of clinching the title as well. Nevertheless, only time will tell what the future beholds.
