2010 Women's World Squash Open: Nicol's fantastic fifth

It was indeed a glorious 2010 Women's World Squash Open final, as Malaysia's top seed, Nicol David, clinched the match based upon her straight set win against Omneya Abdel Kawy; the first ever Egyptian sportswoman to have made it to a World Open final.

David got off to a good start, as she took the first set of the match, eleven points to five. It wasn't however, until the second set that Kawy rose up in terms of her performance. The Egyptian athlete managed to take the lead sometime during the second set.
Nevertheless, Nicol managed to keep exercising her authority on the professional as she took the second set eleven points to eight.

As the third set commenced, it seemed quite likely that the World no. 1 would go on to win the match. Fortunately for Nicol, that was the case. In a matter of a little over half an hour, David brought a close to the match by taking the third set eleven points
to six.

Triumphant, Nicol David stated, “My focus was strong throughout the tournament. I really wanted this. I didn’t want to let it slip.” Alongside, as good as the temparment of the match was, it was great to see high spirited, Kawy showing true sportswomanship
as she had a beaming smile across her face, even though she stood defeated on home-land.

Apart from coming out victorious at the 2010 Women's World Squash Open, David's win gave rise to her fifth World Open title, equalling Australia's Sarah Fitzgerald's World Open record. In the words of Nicol herself, “It’s amazing that I can do something that
Sarah has done, because she’s such a great player.”

Prior to David's championship win, the professional eliminated Britain's Alison Waters in a 38 minute tussle, played between the two. Nicol took the match three sets in a row, defeating Waters 14-12, 11-2 and 11-6 respectively.

Along the side of which, making her first ever apperance at a World Open semi-final, Egypt's Omneya Abdel Kawy annihilated Frenchwoman, Camille Serme in a crisp twenty six minute, three set match. Serme was defeated 11-4, 11-7 and verily, 11-6.

As disappointing as it was for Kawy to have been defeated on home-ground, the professional seemed to have taken it well. Even though Omneya stood defeated on home-ground, making it through to the final was no little an achievemnt. Additionally, Nicol David
proved able enough to conquer the championship in spite of playing on her opponent's home-land.
