2010 Women’s World Squash Open: Quarter-finalists
Eight extremely talented professionals battled it out in the second round of the 2010 Women’s World Squash Open to secure a place for themselves in the quarter-finals of the championship. Unfortunately, for four of them, the run was ended as for the remaining
four; they advanced because as they say, the show must go on.
Currently ranked no. 1 in the World, Malaysia’s Nicol David performed flawlessly in the quarter-final match played between herself and compatriot, Low Wee Wern. In a brief twenty-seven minute match, David defeated Wern 11-2, 11-5 and 11-2 respectively.
Based on Nicol’s quarter-final performance, it seems as though she’s made up her mind about clinching the championship, and grab seventh successive World Open title.
On the contrary, Britain’s Alison Waters and fellow countrywoman Vanessa Atkinson, engaged into an arduous fifty-six minute, five-set match.  Waters took the second set 11-4, prior to losing the first set 9-11. She went on to win the third set 11-7 until
Atkinson bounced back to take the fourth set 12-10, after winning a tie-breaker.
Nevertheless, the fifth set went on in favour of Waters, as she took the set 11-8, to send companion, Vanessa Atkinson home.
Having earlier defeated Ireland’s Madeline Perry, Australia’s Kasey Brown made it through to the following round, only to be thrashed by Egypt’s Omneya Abdel Kawy in a four set match played between the two. Kawy took the first set 11-8 and went on to win
the second set 14-12. The Egyptian lost the third set 6-11 but came back to take the deciding fourth set 11-5.
Omneya came to be the first Egyptian to make it through to the semi-finals of a World Open, apart from being the only Egyptian to remain in the competition.
Amongst the lucky four to have made it through to the semis was French woman, Camille Serme. In a match lasting over fifty minutes, Serme defeated Britain’s Jenny Duncalf to make it through. Camille lost the first set 8-11.
However, the professional took the second set 11-7. Right after which, she lost the third set 7-11. Nonetheless, Serme proceeded to win the fourth and fifth set 11-2 and 11-5 verily.
Similar to Egypt’s Kawy, Camille is the first French woman to have made it to the semi-finals of the World Open.
Advancing to the semi-finals, Malaysia’s Nicol David will be made to face England’s Alison Waters in the semi-finals. Alongside, Kawy will be opposed by Serme in the semi-final match of their draw.
