2010 Women’s season; some important happenings on the WTA tour- Part three
Here is the third part of the series reviewing the 2010 WTA tennis season in terms of some important happenings on the tour.
Hard -Europe/Asia
Leading up to the United States Open, Kim Clijsters, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Victoria Azarenka and Caroline Wozniacki gave stunning results and won premier level competitions in San Diego, Stanford, Montreal and Cincinnati and thereby
giving a clear signal that the hunt for the year’s final Grand Slam title is going to be no less than a slugfest.
Caroline who got the top seeding, following then world number one Serena William's withdrawal, saw her run come to an end by the Russian tennis player Vera Zvonareva, who made her way into the second major final of her career on
the tour.
The Belgian tennis sensation, Kim Clijsters, on the other hand, played some impressive tennis as she fought past her Australian foe Samantha Stosur and the local favourite Venus Williams, to advance into the finals. In the title
battle, Clijsters did well to emerge victorious in the end by lifting her second United States Open title in a row.
Vera Zvonareva’s breakthrough
Vera Zvonareva of Russia achieved new heights in what is regarded as her breakthrough year on the tour. After winning her maiden crown in Pattaya City in the first quarter of 2010, Vera made her way into the finals at the grass
court Grand Slam tournament, followed by another few in Montreal and Beijing before advancing into her second major final in New York. In the title battle, the right hander however was defeated at the hands of Kim Clijsters of Belgium.
Unfortunately, in the absence of trophy victories from a couple of high profile championship finals, Vera is left with a lot more to think about.
During a title presentation at the United States Open in New York, Kim Clijsters consoled her final foe by saying, "You are a great player. Keep it going. It will happen. It took me six of seven finals until I got my first one.”
The Russian repled to Clijsters by saying," Kim is a great champion, but also a great person. Because she said that, maybe I am not so disappointed now. Hopefully I will have another chance. Hopefully I will go far in another Grand
Slam. Hopefully I will be more experienced."
Her, fans of course are also looking forward to just that happening soon in the near future.
Controversies regarding Serena William’s early end to the season
Former world number one Serena Williams from the United States of America, injured her right foot at a restaurant back in July and needed eighteen stitches, followed by a foot surgery. This eventually forcing the American to skip
the year’s final Grand Slam and the United States Open in New York. Even after the Flushing Meadows event, Williams also missed a series of other championships, however her repetitive visits to fashion shows and other social gatherings created a controversy
regarding the exact state of her health.
Her subsequent withdrawal from season-end tournaments made her finish the year ranked number four, behind world number one Caroline Wozniacki, Vera Zvonareva and Kim Clijsters. She, however, was not the only one who created a buzz
of controversy as her elder sister Venus Williams also made headlines for all the wrong reasons for her see-through dresses, the heavily criticized of which was her lacy corset top outfit for competitions in Paris, Miami and Madrid.
