2010 World Cup: Nigeria v Greece half time report
Nigeria 1 Greece 1
Both teams are all square after the first 45 minutes at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.
Nigeria took the lead on 33 minutes when Kalu Uche’s free kick went all the way in.
From then on, Nigeria looked the better side and were the more likely to go on and score another. However, the turning point of the first half came when Nigeria’s Sani Kaita stupidly received a red card after he kicked out at Vassilis Torosidis.
Greece knew that they would have to attack, and the introduction of Giorgios Samaras signified their intentions.
Greece, without a goal and a single point in World Cup finals, were level two minutes before the break.
Dimitris Salpingidis will do well to claim the goal, as his shot from the edge of the box wickedly deflected off Haruna Lukman, which sent Nigeria keeper Vincent Enyeama the wrong way.
Samaras had a decent chance to put the Greeks in front, but his miscued shot was cleared comfortably off the line.
The red card has thrown Greece a major lifeline in a match they cannot afford to lose.
