2010 World Cup Spain : David Villa says Footballing is not about your mouth it is about your feet
David Villa grew up in Asturias, which is in the northern regions of Spain; he fractured his femur when he was only 4 years old. The doctors did not operate on him as Villa's parents opted for a non-invasive and unusual procedure which ended up healing the bone entirely.
With the constant support and help for football from his father’s side, Villa was well on his way in becoming a magnanimous and illustrious player. However, there was a falling out between Villa and a coach, which resulted in him sitting on the bench a whole season. Villa with a lot of support from his father joined the local team UP Langero before opting football as a professional career.
Several clubs initially did divulge some interest in David Villa. A lot of them however, believed that he was too short to ever become an extraordinary striker. Ultimately, Villa’s local club gave him a shot, and he did not foil. Villa scored 40 goals in two seasons, becoming Sporting de Gijon's most consistent striker. A lot of people knew that it was only a matter of time before the cash-strapped club would have to sell their star player to stay afloat.
With a covenant price of just €3 million, Real Zaragoza managed to get the striker of the highest tier that had baffled them for so long, now David Villa was finally playing against the best Spain had to offer. Even though David Villa's departure from Sporting de Gijon was a bit reluctant, he did not waste any time from making his mark on La Liga, scoring 17 times in his first season. Villa eventually took his team to the 2004 Copa Del Rey finals against Real Madrid. Villa’s goal helped Real Zaragosa defeat the Spanish Giants, Real Madrid, and shocked the world with a 3-2 win that gave the team a spot in the UEFA 2005 Cup.
Even though Villa’s team was bumped off in the round of 16, Villa scored multiple times in his first contact with the top European clubs. The whole soccer world took notice of the striker, which meant that David Villa’s days as a low-profile Real Zaragoza were officially numbered.
For the second time David Villa's club was in financial trouble, and decided to sell their star player in order to maintain the financial viability of the team. For astounding figure of €12 million, Villa was transferred to Valencia, where he has scored 87 goals in 137 matches. Only one more player has had a more prolific strike rate in La Liga and that is Samuel Eto. His first season alone saw him net 25 goals in 35 matches. The second season that Villa played in Valencia saw him lead the team to the quarterfinals of the Champions League where they ultimately lost to Chelsea.
Throughout David Villa’s time at Valencia, David Villa established himself as one of best soccer players in the world, and he created more assists than anyone else. This was also a major reason why all the major clubs like Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Barcelona all approached Valencia about signing their Villa. Despite the allure of playing for one of the world's biggest clubs, Villa desired to stay at Valencia and complete his contract. This loyalty captivated his fans, even though Valencia has seen its share of struggles.
When the Real Madrid manager Bernd Schuster failed to sign him, he accused Villa of having "no ambition" to which David responded: "Footballing ambition is not about your mouth; it is about your feet. You can accuse me of lots of things -- of having a bad day, of missing chances, of many things -- but I have always had ambition and always will have."
Since scoring three goals for Spain in the 2006 World Cup, David Villa has been his country's most consistent and decisive striker. However, there was no warning for what Villa was about to do in the Euro 2008, Villa actually scored the first hat trick in the European championships 2000. But sadly when Spain got to the finals, Villa had suffered a hamstring injury and did not play that game. Even though Villa did not play in that match, Spain won that match against Germany 1-0, and the Golden Boot was won by David Villa for scoring the most goals in the tournament.
David Villa is ranked number three for the World Cup 2010 Top Goal Scorers. Villa scored his fourth goal of the competition for a 1-0 win that took Spain into the quarterfinals against Portugal on June 29th. Furthermore, a headline read “Move over Cristiano Ronaldo, and make room for David Villa as Iberia's biggest football star” It is just a matter of time now, whether this star player can lead Spain to lift the trophy!
