2010 World Cup: Vela vows Mexico will shine against France
The young forward from Arsenal, Carlos Vela might have scored an off side goal in the FIFA World Cup opening match but has high hopes and enthusiasm for the rest of the tournament. He failed to produce finishing touches for goals but is confident about changing all that and becoming a source for three points against France.
In the match against South Africa, Rafael Marquez’s stroke of brilliance just eleven minutes from the end balanced the marvel by Siphiwe Tshabalala resulting in a 1-1 draw between South Africa and Mexico in the World Cup opener.
With the other teams from Group A, France and Uruguay drawing, all teams are now leveled at 1 point a piece. Now the major turnaround can come from the clash at Polokwane between France and Mexico.
Vela explained that he would produce his best to win for the fans of his country. Vela is considered a world class striker however his general performance is good. What has left him behind in the race is his deficiency of goals. He said that he himself was confounded about why he hadn’t scored much, “I wouldn’t know how to answer that question”.
He optimistically added that the Eli Tri had a lot of opportunities to score goals and that that was good. The next step was to avail them. He explained, “For example, I always want to score all the goals possible. I’m not thinking about missing them. I don’t gain anything by missing them on purpose. You always try to do your best work and win the game. Unfortunately, in the last game luck I wasn’t there to score a goal, but we’re calm because we’ve had the opportunities and we know that the goals have to come”.
While talking to media Vela said that the Mexican coach Javier Aguirre had inspired them to win all the matches. He said the team had a similar spirit of unification under one flag and have one goal; and that was to bring glory to the nation in the World Cup.
He also confided that before the first game they were focused for each and every win. Vela admitted that they weren’t able to win the first match but there were no excuses for it. He claimed that be it France or any other, they were training hard to win against them.
France has been in quite a slump recently. From the time when, Thierry Henry handed France the notorious ‘the Hand of Frog’ goal, against the Republic of Ireland. The Les Bleus have just had one victory in four friendlies and that includes the 1-0 humiliation they faced against China.
Nevertheless the Gunner striker is wary of the fact that the French team played in the finals of the 2006 World Cup in Germany and underestimating them would be a big mistake. He tallied that saying they would faced them as any other, “'It's all relative, because you can say they are going through a bad moment, but when you get out onto the pitch it's very different. You don't remember what's taken place in previous games”.
He then added the team was ready to make history, “The team remains the same as when we started. We had a good first half(against South Africa), the second wasn’t as good, but the desire to keep on winning and making history is the same”.
Vera confessed that just words weren’t enough, and that he would make them clearer with his actions. He claimed that Mexico had a well balanced and skillful team with full capability of the task ahead of them. He also remarked that they had an edge over the French as they had a dismissal campaign littered with poor performances.
Vela sanguinely added, “We know they’re great players and a great team, and at any moment they could wake up and do a good job. I think that we need to think in our work and leave aside what France is going to do because we know that we have a great team and we can win”.
