2010 World Cup semi-final: Uruguay v Netherlands half time report
Uruguay 1 Netherlands 1
Two stunning goals from both sides’ captains have lit up a spiky World Cup semi-final in Cape Town.
The Netherlands took the lead through a breathtaking strike from their skipper Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who crashed an unstoppable left-footed effort past Fernando Muslera from fully 40 yards just 18 minutes into the contest.
However, Uruguay captain Diego Forlán wasn’t to be outdone, and the Atlético Madrid forward struck a swerving shot past Maarten Stekelenburg from distance just five minutes before half time.
The goals have been in stark contrast to most of the rest of the contest, which has seen Wesley Sneijder and Martin Cáceres booked for an ugly confrontation following Cáceres accidentally kicking Demy de Zeeuw in the face.
Dirk Kuyt went close early on for the Dutch, but it was Uruguay who improved as the half went on, peaking with Forlán’s strike.
It promises to be an intriguing second half.
