2010 defending champions Red Bull Racing optimistic about fixing their KERS issue – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing have been going through a lot of problems regarding their Kinetic Energy Recovery System since the beginning of the 2011 Formula 1 season and they have failed to fix these problems so far.
However, the team claimed once again that they are hoping to solve these problems in the near future.
Despite the fact that Red Bull Racing are currently dominating the 2011 Formula 1 season by quite a margin, their problems regarding their KERS device have still not been solved. Since they are using this device for the first time for their car, it is believed
that the team might be having problems understanding the device completely.
KERS was introduced back in 2009 for the first time and back then, Red Bull Racing were one of the few teams which did not use the device. Even though they did not use KERS, they finished in second place in the constructors’ standings.
KERS in short is a device which stores the heat energy generated by the braking kit of the car and then converts it into Kinetic Energy for later use which gives the car a sort of an ‘acceleration boost.’ However, the boost does not exceed more than 5 seconds.
Adrian Newey explained the team’s approach regarding KERS stating that he does not regret what the team did.
“With hindsight (the group was) probably a little bit too small,” said Newey.
It is believed that McLaren have the most efficient KERS system on the grid while Red Bull Racing on the other hand applied a different formula on their device as they made a smaller device which does not weigh as much as the rest of the teams’ devices.
“I'm still sure that we've done the right thing. Once we get it to work, we'll be happy that we've made the right choices. We haven't made any wrong decisions,” the team’s chief designer Rob Marshall told the media.
Newey added that they did not begin their KERS project with many people and even though the team is still the best on the grid, they are hoping to improve their performance even more by getting rid of the problems with their device soon.
