2010 olympics: Can Russia hang with Canada again?

They showed a lot of heart and skill in this year's victory over canada at the world championship. And look at their players. Otherworldly skill up front, improving defense, and a Vezina calibre goalie in Nabokov. Still, it's canada.

Canada was missing Crosby, Iginla, Lecavalier, Thornton, Brodeur, Pronger, (need I go on)

Russia was missing Datsyuk and Malkin

One could actually make a case that without Sundin, Alfredsson, Zetterberg, and Lidstrom.............Sweden will be better in 2010 than Russia.

With the addition of players still playin in the NHL that missed the tourney I would say it is going to be a spectacular matchup.  I wish we could skip the summer olympics and have the winter olympics every 2 years lol.  I miss international hockey and curling :)  Running events suck.

No i dont think so. i mean Canada were missing so many pplayers that would have had a great impact on the team. yes russia was missing malkin but how much of a difference can he make. so i think Canada  will win 2010 but Russia will definately have a great team.

While I agree with LITY in part about the great players Canada was missing,  generally Canada has a deeper talent pool and if everyone is missing some players we should benefit as our second string tends to be better.

The only time we truly see the best is in the Olympics, Canada is 1 for 3 in the Olympics(with Nhlers), so will Russia hang with Canada.  I think someone will.  It may be Russia it may be Sweden.... it may be anyone with a hot goaltender.  One game elimination- not always the best team who wins.

That said Datsuyk/Ovechkin / Malkin with another year and 1/2 experience will be dangerous.  In the past some guys have refused to play for Russia, if everyone is there the will be competitive and finish with a medal.

i don't disagree with you lity, considering the contingent that will be sweden in 2010...but really. i mean russia sweden semis, and you'll take the swedes over russia?

(i would too...but that's only because i root for them regardless).

i think team finland and czech are going to play better hockey at the olympics, and to scott d, no way should there not be summer games...it was there first!
