2010 season- frustrating for Red Bull amazing for F1
Finally, the Red Bull team boss, Christian Horner admits that the title battle was a long and frustrating one for the Austrian squad.
A season that is largely seen as the most thrilling and exciting one for the sport and of course very nerve tickling for the fans, was in fact a very demanding one for the Austrian squad. It is very commonly believed that the
2010 Formula One season has shown one of the toughest tugs for the title in 60 years of the Formula One’s history. The top five drivers of the season gave a very tough competition to each other, as all were equally adamant to bag the championship.
As many others also believe, the championship should have been wrapped by the Red Bull very earlier, owing to the car they possessed. The team gained pace right at the start of the season and has kept dominating the track since then. Even after having secured
15 pole positions and 9 race wins, the team was not able to finalise the drivers’ title until the last race and the constructors’ title until the second last race of the season.
The Red Bull Racing got a big share of reliability issues and has also been seen making some poor mistakes on the track, especially the championship winner Sebastian Vettel, who experienced both in abundance. At the season-opener, the Bahrain Grand Prix,
a spark plug issue halted the 23-year-old’s race followed by the poor round in Australia where a wheel nut issue deprived him from a race win. Last but the worst of all mishaps was seen at the Korean Grand Prix, where his engine failed just at the last laps
while he was heading for a certain victory.
But despite of the various gremlins, Vettel came from third in the standings to win the World title at the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi, handing Red Bull the Championship double.
While recalling all the mishaps now, the team principal said, "That's an interesting way of looking at it. Ultimately, I think it was a fantastic result, and it was great that a Red Bull driver won the World Championship. Of course, if luck had smiled on
us a little earlier in the year...”
He further added, "I think that was ultimately good for the Championship, though - it would have been nice to have had everything tied up by August, but things turned out okay in the end and I think it was better for F1 the way it was.”
