2011 19e Open GDF Suez women’s first round (part 1)

Nadia Petrova defeats Virginie Razzano 6-1, 6-3
Russian tennis pro, Nadia Petrova, defeated local wild card, Virginie Razzano, in straight sets in the first round of the Open GDF Suez, in a match, which lasted just over one hour and eleven minutes.
Petrova was a clear favourite to win the match, being more experienced and higher-ranked. The twenty-eight year old world number 20, made short work of her French opponent, who is ranked 83 in the world.
Razzano and Petrova both play right handed. The two players turned pro in the same year, 1999. Razzano, 27 years old, has won two career titles so far. On the other hand, Petrova has amassed nine titles, and defeated Razzano in their last two matches.
Their head to head is now 3-0 to Petrova. Their first meeting was in 2005, when they met in the qualifying rounds at the hard courts of the Australian Open. Razzano was rated world number 63 at the time, while Petrova was eleventh seed as world number 13.
The Russian defeated her French opponent in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
Their last match was in 2007, at Los Angeles. They met on the hard court surface in the quarterfinals of the tournament, when Razzano was World Number 52, and, Petrova was the fourth seed at World Number 9.
Petrova defeated Razzano in three sets, losing the first set in a close battle. The final score-line was 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-1.
Sofia Arvidsson defeats Alize Cornet 6-2, 7-6(5)
Swedish tennis pro, Sofia Arvidsson, ousted local player, Alize Cornet, in the first round of the 19e Open GDF Suez, defeating the French player 6-2, 7-6(5). The match lasted a little over one hour and forty-seven minutes.
Arvidsson has been playing tennis as a professional since 1999, and is currently 26 years old. She is ranked World Number 60, and resides in her hometown Halmstad. On the other side, Cornet is only a few spots behind Arvidsson at World Number 67. She is
21 years old and lives in her birthplace, Nice.
Both players have won a title apiece, and both play right handed tennis. So far, Cornet has won four of the eight matches she has played in 2011. Arviddson has won three of seven challenges.
French tennis players have come up remarkably short at the local tournament for the past two years.
Last year, no players made it to the last eight, this year the local contingent has been further handicapped by the absence of Marion Bartoli, who is injured, and Aravane Rezai, who has taken time off for personal reasons. It seems as if no French tennis
players will be left for the more competitive rounds.
