2011 19e Open GDF Suez women’s first round part 3
Andrea Petkovic defeats Angelique Kerber 7-5, 3-6, 6-2
Germany’s favourite tennis player, Andrea Petkovic, defeated her compatriot Angelique Kerber in three sets at the first round of the Open GDF Suez.
Petkovic won the first set 7-5, lost the second set to Kerber 3-6, and won the last set to win the match with a final score-line of 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.
This match is the longest one yet played at the all-women tournament, lasting over two hours and eleven minutes. World number 24, Petkovic, is currently almost 30 spots ahead of Kerber, who is number 50. Petkovic plays right handed, while Kerber plays left
handed.
Petkovic is 23 years old, as is Angelique Kerber. However, she turned pro in 2006, three years after Kerber. This is Petkovic’s second win over her fellow countrywoman. The two players have competed against each other eight times.
Their first meeting was in 2005 at Zagreb, in Croatia. Petkovic was ranked world number 416, and Kerber was number 259. They met in the quarterfinals, and Kerber defeated Petkovic in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
The next time the two players competed against each other was in Madrid, a year later. Petkovic had made a hundred-spot jump on the charts, while Kerber was near her opponent’s old ranking place at world number 417.
However, she won the quarterfinal match 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(5).
Kerber and Petkovic met two more times in 2006, once in Hasselt and once in Prerov. At Hasselt, Petkovic and Kerber were very near each other in ranking as world number 240 and world number 244 respectively.
Petkovic drove Kerber to three sets in the quarterfinal, but Kerber came out on top once again with 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Their next meeting was in Prerov, where Petkovic was number 238 and Kerber was number 214. Kerber defeated Petkovic in straight sets 6-3, 6-1
in the fourth round.
In 2007, they played against each other on the hard courts of Tenerife. Kerber was the third seed at the event at world number 141, while Petkovic was world number 187. Kerber defeated Petkovic easily, winning the match 6-0, 6-2 in the round of the last
sixteen. This is the worst defeat that Petkovic has ever suffered at the hands of Kerber.
Their first and only Grand Slam match was at the 2009 US Open, where Petkovic was number 54 and Kerber was number 107. Nonetheless, she defeated Petkovic in the qualifying rounds to win the match 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
Their last meeting was at Linz in 2010, and it marked the occasion of Petkovic’s first victory against her compatriot. She was seeded sixth at the event, as world number 36, Kerber was number 52. Petkovic won the match to progress to the round of the last
sixteen in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
Petkovic will be facing Slovakian player, Kristina Kucova, in the second round of the Open GDF Suez.
