2011 19e Open GDF Suez women’s second round (part 2)
Dominika Cibulkova defeats Melanie Oudin 6-4, 7-6(5)
Slovakian tennis player, Dominika Cibulkova, defeated American tennis pro, Melanie Oudin, in the second round of the Open GDF Suez, ousting her opponent in straight sets 6-5, 7-6(5).
The match was less than two hours long, lasting one hour and fifty-two minutes.
Ranked 27 in the world, Dominika Cibulkova is almost forty spots above 61 ranked Oudin, Cibulkova is also older than the 19 year old Oudin by two years. Both players play right-handed tennis. Cibulkova turned pro in 2004, while Melanie Oudin followed suit
by joining the WTA Tour in 2008.
Cibulkova was a clear favourite to win the match. The player has won seven of her twelve matches so far in 2011, while Oudin has been defeated in all five of her contests.
The American player made a considerable splash in the tennis scene after she broke through at the 2009 US Open, but she has come up short since then. Although, she is regarded as one of the most talented teenagers on the WTA, Oudin has failed to produce
any significant win in the past year and a half.
Oudin also had a nondescript start to the year, and she seems to have lost the ability to fight against some of the better players in the game. The 19 year old suffered first round losses at Hobart and the Australian Open, and was decimated by Kim Clijsters
at the Fed Cup matches last weekend.
However, Cibulkova has always been regarded as a fierce contender in any battle. She has defeated many leading tennis players since she turned pro, and her performance is anything but nondescript.
She began the match with confidence, as she recently had quarterfinal showings at both Brisbane and Sydney. The 21 year old player also made it to the third round of this year’s Australian Open, adding to her considerably impressive resume as a tennis player.
Cibulkova has faced Melanie Oudin once before, and their head to head score is now two-love in the Slovakian’s favour. Their first and only meeting before this was at the New Haven tournament in 2010.
At that time, the two players were ranked very close to each other. Oudin was world number 44, and Dominika Cibulkova followed at world number 45. Nonetheless, the Slovakian pro came up on top in the round of the last thirty-two, defeating her American opponent
6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
Cibulkova, who is seeded eighth, defeated Croatian Ana Vrljic to make it to the first round. She will now face either third seed, Kaia Kanepi, from Estonia, or Swiss tennis pro Sofia Arvidsson in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
