2011 ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga enters next round
Number two Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga sailed comfortably into the second round of the 2011 ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam. After he defeated qualifier Grigor Dimitrov.
Given the huge disparity in the ranking, it came as no surprise to anyone when the hard hitting Frenchman did away with Dimitrov in straight sets taking no more than seventy five minutes. Tsonga now leads the head to head score 1-0.
Serving in the opener, Dimitrov landed a slightly higher 57% inside the T, as opposed to Tsonga’s 56% scoring 85% of it where Tsonga only managed a winning percentage of 74%. However, the Frenchman struck four aces and successfully converted one of one break opportunities to clinch a 6-4 victory in the first set.
Leading the set score 1-0, Tsonga established his dominance early in the second set, breaking Dimitrov and leading 2-0. Registering an acceptable 74% on his first serve, Tsonga recorded an impressive 94% winning percentage on it as he sped towards victory.
Never allowing the Bulgarian to catch up, Tsonga sailed into another 6-4 victory as he sealed his straight sets and moved on ahead in the event.
The hard hitting Frenchman struck a resounding total of eleven aces and cashed in on Dimitrov’s six double faults - to secure his victory! He successfully managed to convert two of break points and lost only thirteen of 57 points on service.
Tsonga moves on ahead to play compatriot Michael Llodra. Llodra had moved ahead in the event on Monday as he defeated the Russian Nikolay Davydenko in straight, though not so simple, sets victory.
Seeded eighth in the event, Tsonga is playing only in his second year here. His debut at the event came in 2009, when he enjoyed straight set wins against local Jesse Huta Galung and Russian Dmitry Tursunov to make his way into the quarterfinals. However, he was denied a shot at a maiden 500 level title win then by world number one Rafael Nadal. Tsonga had later clinched a maiden win at Tokyo the same year.
Having spent last year plagued with injuries and without any title wins, Tsonga will surely be extra motivated to end his title drought by winning a title here.
