2011 ASB Classic: Greta Arn topples Julia Goerges to cruise into final
31-year-old Greta Arn of Hungary got the better of her fourth seed opponent Julia Goerges in the semi-final match of the 2011 ASB Classic Women’s singles competition in two sets on Friday. The final match score was 7-6, 6-3.
Greta previously advanced into the final-four round after brushing aside the top seed Maria Sharapova of Russia in straight sets.
As a result of this victory, the right-hander not only made her way into the title battle of the event but also proved that her win over Sharapova was no fluke. She will take on the last year’s winner Yanina Wickmayer in the final on Saturday. It is going
to be their second career meeting on the tour. In their only previous encounter, Yanina triumphed comfortably in straight sets.
The Belgian tennis ace Yanina stormed into the final earlier on Friday after hammering down Peng Shuai of China in three sets.
Arn, who achieved her career-high ranking of world number 81 back in 2002, after the match said, “I am definitely playing some of the best tennis of my life."
The Hungarian, who is playing in her first tournament of the 2011 season, opened her account by beating Sofia Arvidsson in three sets. Arn prevented five match points on her way to victory. However, the biggest victory of her career was when she ousted three-time
Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova.
World number 88 Arn, had a tight first set in her Friday’s match against Julia before eventually winning it in the end. The second set was a one-sided affair and Greta clearly played superior tennis to get past her opponent.
Arn, who has so far won just a single WTA title in her career, looked extremely confident in her match against the German. She played with a lot of patience and intelligence to outclass Goerges and thus confirmed her berth in the final.
